Evaluation of the phycoremediation potential of microalgae for captan removal: Comprehensive analysis on toxicity, detoxification and antioxidants modulation

Seham M. Hamed et al.

Summary: This study investigates the toxicity and removal efficiency of the fungicide captan by two different taxonomic species, Scenedesmus obliquus and Nostoc muscorum. The results show that S. obliquus accumulates more captan but efficiently degrades it into eco-friendly by-products. S. obliquus also exhibits less decrease in cell growth and photosynthesis activity. The study provides a better understanding of the environmental risks of captan and identifies S. obliquus as a promising phycoremediator for captan.

Microalgae growth with a high concentration of emerging pollutants and phytotoxicity evaluation of cultivation wastewater

Alan Rempel et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the influence of emerging pollutants on the growth of microalgae and seed germination. The results showed that Scenedesmus obliquus was able to grow in all mixtures of pollutants, while Spirulina platensis experienced cell death in mixtures containing paracetamol. The culture medium of microalgae had toxic effects on seed germination, but by choosing the right microalgae strain, it is possible to use them for bioremediation and reduce the negative effects on seed germination.

Pollutant toxicology with respect to microalgae and cyanobacteria

Tao Lu et al.

Summary: Microalgae and cyanobacteria play a crucial role in aquatic ecosystems, and toxicological research on them is essential for evaluating aquatic ecotoxicology. However, further improvement is needed in understanding toxic mechanisms and expanding toxicological investigations. The complexity of water pollution, with existing and emerging pollutants, underscores the importance of studying the toxicological effects of pollutants on microalgae and cyanobacteria for better risk assessment.

Removal of pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) from wastewater using microalgae: A review

Sufia Hena et al.

Summary: Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) are emerging micro-pollutants that have harmful effects on living organisms even at low doses. Previous studies have shown their presence in the environment at hazardous levels due to inefficient conventional wastewater treatment plants. Microalgae-mediated treatment offers benefits such as CO2 mitigation during culture and the use of biomass for biodiesel or biofuel production.

Effects of long-term exposure to oxytetracycline on phytoremediation of swine wastewater via duckweed systems

Hao Hu et al.

Summary: The study found that oxytetracycline affects duckweed-based phytoremediation systems treating swine wastewater. Low concentrations of oxytetracycline can promote the synthesis of certain beneficial substances, specific concentrations of oxytetracycline induce oxidative stress in duckweed, and oxytetracycline also significantly affects the metabolic activity of duckweed-associated microorganisms.

Environmental risk analysis of pharmaceuticals on freshwater phytoplankton assemblage: effects on alpha, beta, and taxonomic diversity

Mohamed Gomaa et al.

Summary: Antibiotics and NSAIDs in the ecosystem can negatively impact phytoplankton diversity and taxonomic structure, with some groups like Cyanoprokaryotes being more sensitive. Hazard index calculations show a correlation between pharmaceutical pollution levels and decreased phytoplankton diversity. High beta diversity values in phytoplankton communities suggest the ability of microalgae to adapt to environmental conditions, with species difference driving the diversity rather than species replacement in highly polluted areas.
