Elevated PSD-95 Blocks Ion-flux Independent LTD: A Potential New Role for PSD-95 in Synaptic Plasticity

Kim Dore et al.

Summary: The study showed that NMDA receptors can signal through conformational change independently of ion flux, leading to long-term depression of synaptic transmission. PSD-95 overexpression was found to block agonist-induced conformational changes in the NMDAR intracellular domain and NMDAR-dependent, ion-flux independent LTD. This suggests that ion-flux independent LTD may be predominant in young animals due to lower levels of PSD-95 at synapses.

Muscarinic Regulation of Spike Timing Dependent Synaptic Plasticity in the Hippocampus

Marco Fuenzalida et al.

Summary: Long-term changes in synaptic transmission, particularly the spike-timing-dependent plasticity, play a crucial role in learning and memory. Acetylcholine modulates this plasticity through diverse muscarinic receptors, allowing flexibility and adaptability in brain network activity during complex behaviors. Understanding the mechanisms of muscarinic modulation of synaptic plasticity can provide insights into shaping learning and memory in the hippocampus.

Simvastatin impairs hippocampal synaptic plasticity and cognitive function in mice

Yujun Guo et al.

Summary: Long-term subcutaneous treatment of simvastatin impairs hippocampal synaptic plasticity and cognitive function in mice, leading to memory deficits, but does not affect motor ability and anxiety behaviors. These effects are transient and can be restored upon drug discontinuation.
