A Review and Perspective on Electrocatalysts Containing Cr for Alkaline Water Electrolysis: Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

A. Falch et al.

Summary: Transition metal-based catalysts have shown great potential for hydrogen generation in alkaline media, with recent focus shifting towards Cr-based catalysts. Research on electrocatalysts containing Zn, Mn, and Cr is still limited compared to other d-metals such as Ni, Fe, Co, and Cu. The use of Cr as a co-catalyst for hydrogen evolution in alkaline media is gaining attention for its competitive electroactivity and stability against precious metal catalysts.

Jooyoung Lee et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that corroding conventional nickel foam in the presence of exotic Fe3+ cations can transform it into a high catalytic electrode for the oxygen evolution reaction. The resulting electrode, made of densely packed Ni0.75Fe2.25O4 nanoparticles less than 5 nm in size, outperforms state-of-the-art IrO2 catalyst by requiring a lower overpotential for OER activity. This approach offers a simple, cost-effective, and scalable route to high-performance OER electrodes for efficient AEM water electrolysis.
