Ag-Catalyzed Remote Unactivated C(sp3)-H Heteroarylation of Free Alcohols in Water

Miao Wang et al.

Summary: The unactivated C(sp(3))-H heteroarylation of free alcohol at the delta position was achieved through a radical procedure catalyzed by silver salt under gentle thermal conditions in water. Protonic acids and Lewis acids were found to efficiently activate pyridines for this Minisci-type reaction. The reaction showed good functional group tolerance and substrate scope, with terminal secondary and tertiary alcohols being suitable substrates. Both electron-donating and -withdrawing groups on the electron-deficient heteroarene substrates yielded the target products in moderate to good yields. The study also included a successful gram-scale experiment and radical blocking/experiment experiments to support the radical mechanism.

Iron-Catalyzed C-C Single-Bond Cleavage of Alcohols

Wei Liu et al.

Summary: An iron-catalyzed deconstruction/hydrogenation reaction of alcohols through C-C bond cleavage has been developed via photocatalysis, yielding ketones or aldehydes as products. This process is applicable to tertiary, secondary, and primary alcohols with a wide range of substituents, including complex natural alcohols. Investigating the mechanism uncovered a process involving chlorine radical-enhanced O-H homolysis, assisted by 2,4,6-collidine.

Iron-Catalyzed Photoinduced Remote C(sp3)-H Amination of Free Alcohols

Ni Xiong et al.

Summary: The experiment presents a general photocatalytic method for the remote C(sp(3))-H bond amination of free aliphatic alcohols, utilizing electron transfer between FeCl3 catalyst and alkanols under blue LED irradiation. It enables alkoxy radical formation under mild redox-neutral conditions without the need for additional oxidants and prefunctionalization. The subsequent selective 1,5-hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) and amination offer a simple and efficient way to access molecular complexity from readily available and bulk alcohols.

Iron-Catalyzed Photoinduced LMCT: A 1° C-H Abstraction Enables Skeletal Rearrangements and C(sp3)-H Alkylation

Yi Cheng Kang et al.

Summary: In this study, an iron-catalyzed method was developed for skeletal rearrangement reactions from unactivated C(sp(3))-H bonds to access alkylated products. By utilizing photoinduced ligand-to-metal charge transfer, a chlorine radical is generated at the iron center to abstract electron-rich C(sp(3))-H bonds, leading to the formation and rearrangement of alkyl radicals for the synthesis of alkylated products. Simple adjustments to the reaction conditions enable the selective synthesis of directly alkylated or rearranged-alkylated products.
