Single and combined effects of microplastics and lead on the freshwater algae Microcystis aeruginosa

Summary: The study investigated the single and combined effects of microplastics (MPs) and lead (Pb) on freshwater algal Microcystis aeruginosa. Results showed that Pb promoted algal cell growth, while MPs inhibited growth. Combination of MPs and Pb had a synergistic effect on promoting aggregations of M. aeruginosa. These findings suggest that the interaction of MPs and Pb can have significant impacts on aquatic ecosystems.
