Reciprocal effects of copper and zinc in plants

P. Liscakova et al.

Summary: This study investigates the reciprocal effects of copper and zinc in plants. The results indicate that most of the interactions are antagonistic, but synergistic effects can occur when combined with other metals. These synergistic effects may lead to increased toxicity in plants, causing leaf chlorosis, growth inhibition, and oxidative stress.

Ecological network analysis reveals distinctive microbial modules associated with heavy metal contamination of abandoned mine soils in Korea

Seong-Jun Chun et al.

Summary: Heavy metal pollution in soil around abandoned mine sites is a critical environmental issue worldwide. In this study, the distribution patterns of bacterial and fungal communities in non-contaminated and heavy metal-contaminated soil were investigated to explore microbial interaction mechanisms and their modular structures. The microbial network was divided into three modules based on the levels of heavy metal pollution, with copper playing a key role in the formation of the heavy metal-tolerant module. Overall, distinct microbial communities formed in response to heavy metal contamination, potentially contributing to bioremediation efforts.

Summary: This study evaluated the cytogenotoxicity of heavy metal contamination in a polluted urban wetland using a battery of cytogenotoxic assays. Different exposure conditions led to varying genotoxic effects of the heavy metal mixture on frog erythrocytes, with the Allium cepa bioassay showing lower sensitivity to heavy metals.

Human health risk via soil ingestion of potentially toxic elements and remediation potential of native plants near an abandoned mine spoil in Ghana

Albert Kobina Mensah et al.

Summary: The study revealed that elements such as arsenic and titanium exceeded the world soil average in soils near an abandoned gold mine in Ghana, indicating high soil contamination levels. Adults and children faced significant human health risks from consuming soil, especially children and women. Some native plants like Chromolaena odorata and ferns may have the potential to reduce soil contamination and associated human health risks by accumulating elements like arsenic, copper, titanium, and zinc into their shoots.
