Insight into the activity of TiO2@nitrogen-doped hollow carbon spheres supported on g-C3N4 for robust photocatalytic performance

Ali Banitalebi Dehkordi et al.

Summary: Designing an advanced nanostructure semiconductor is an effective strategy to enhance charge separation and improve photocatalytic activity. Surface deposition of core shell nanoparticles on g-C3N4 can significantly enhance photocatalytic performance, with nitrogen-doped hollow carbon spheres playing a crucial role in improving dispersion of TiO2 nanoparticles and enhancing charge separation. Optimal content of core shell nanoparticles demonstrates a solar-driven photocatalytic degradation efficiency of approximately 85%.

Polyamide microplastics in wastewater as vectors of cationic pharmaceutical drugs

Antony Wagstaff et al.

Summary: The study found that more hydrophobic pharmaceuticals adsorb significantly to polyamide microplastics in wastewater, while hydrophilic pharmaceuticals have low adsorption and limited desorption. Microplastics may transport adsorbed pharmaceuticals for considerable distances after discharge, serving as a vector of pharmaceutical drugs from wastewater treatment plants to aquatic organisms. The desorption rates vary in simulated gastric fluids and different temperatures.

The potential effects of microplastic pollution on human digestive tract cells

Yuting Zhang et al.

Summary: Environmental microplastics can enter the human body through food and have negative effects on organism health. In this study, different sizes of polystyrene particles were examined for their effects on human colonic epithelial cells and small intestinal epithelial cells. The uptake of nanosized polystyrene particles was found to be more potential than microsized particles, and the amount of uptake was proportional to the exposure time. The polystyrene particles had no significant effect on cell viability and apoptosis, but the high concentration showed low toxicity to oxidative stress levels and mitochondrial membrane potential. Additionally, the membrane damage caused by microsized particles was significantly higher than that of nanosized particles.

Microplastic fibres from synthetic textiles: Environmental degradation and additive chemical content

Shannen T. L. Sait et al.

Summary: This study investigated the environmentally relevant photodegradation of common microplastic fibres (MPFs) such as polyester (PET), polyamide (PA), and polyacrylonitrile (PAN). Results showed that PET and PA MPFs underwent significant fragmentation and surface changes under UV exposure, while PAN did not. Chemical analysis identified monomers, UV stabilisers, and degradation products in MPFs and aqueous leachates. Bisphenols (BPs) and benzophenones (BzPs) were also found in all MPFs, with wool displaying the highest concentration of BPs and BzPs.

Surface polarization enables high charge separation in TiO2 nanorod photoanode

Wei Ma et al.

Summary: A surface-polarized TiO2 photoanode obtained through -OH moiety decoration achieves significantly improved charge separation efficiency, promoting water oxidation kinetics and delivering increased photocurrent density and cathodic shift on onset potential without typical doping or cocatalyst. This study highlights the potential of surface polarization in modulating charge separation for constructing robust photoanodes.

An investigation into the leaching of micro and nano particles and chemical pollutants from disposable face masks - linked to the COVID-19 pandemic

G. L. Sullivan et al.

Summary: The study found that disposable plastic face masks emit micro and nano scale polymeric fibers, particles, chemicals, and heavy metals when submerged in water to simulate environmental conditions. The presence of toxic chemicals and potential risks from certain residues raise concerns about the safety of daily use and disposal of these masks.

Typhoon-induced turbulence redistributed microplastics in coastal areas and reformed plastisphere community

Liming Chen et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the impact of Typhoon Wipha on microplastics in surface water and sediment in coastal areas of Shenzhen, revealing a significant increase in microplastics in surface water and a decrease in sediment. The study suggested a possible influx of microplastics introduced by the typhoon, which could lead to alterations in the coastal ecosystem.

Insight into chain scission and release profiles from photodegradation of polycarbonate microplastics

Yanqi Shi et al.

Summary: Bisphenol A polycarbonate is a widely used engineering plastic, but excessive usage leads to the production of plastic wastes and high risks of chemical release. This study found that PC microplastics undergo photoaging in aquatic environment, releasing organic compounds such as BPA, which may pose potential risks to the environment and biota.

Microplastics disrupt accurate soil organic carbon measurement based on chemical oxidation method

Shin Woong Kim et al.

Summary: This study found that microplastics can disrupt the accurate measurement of soil organic carbon (SOC), possibly due to the extraction of organic compounds and/or carbon complexes from the microplastics during the SOC measurement process. Contamination of microplastics may lead to overestimations of SOC, which is significant for assessing soil quality and the global carbon cycle.

Sulfide induces physical damages and chemical transformation of microplastics via radical oxidation and sulfide addition

Mengting Zhao et al.

Summary: The utilization of sulfide in aquatic environments and engineered systems may lead to the oxidation and transformation of microplastics, causing physical and chemical alterations to the materials and affecting the properties of microplastics. Sulfide oxidation may also synergistically interact with radical oxidation, contributing to the transformation of microplastics.
