Anthropogenic Gadolinium Accumulation and Rare Earth Element Anomalies of River Water from the Middle Reach of Yangtze River Basin, China

Tao Wang et al.

Summary: Investigation in the middle Yangtze River basin of central China revealed anthropogenic rare earth elements as microcontaminants in surface waters, with heavy rare earth element enrichment in certain rivers. Higher anthropogenic gadolinium concentrations in Fuhe River and Hanjiang River were attributed to wastewater treatment plant discharges.

Anthropogenic gadolinium as a tracer of raw sewage in surface water

Thais De Paula Marteleto et al.

Summary: The presence of anthropogenic gadolinium in surface water of a small drainage area was attributed to leakage of raw sewage, likely from a hospital running MRI exams employing Gd-CAs. Apart from natural Gd, a distinct Gd species was found to contribute up to 95% to its whole content in the water samples.
