Sustainable solutions to arsenic accumulation in rice grown in south and south-east Asia

Sudhakar Srivastava et al.

Summary: Arsenic contamination of the environment through rice and rice-based food products is a serious issue, especially in South and Southeast Asian countries. Research efforts in the past two decades have focused on finding solutions to the arsenic problem in rice, with emphasis on proper irrigation water management and balanced nutrient supplementation to reduce arsenic toxicity and enhance rice nutritional quality. Various agronomic and biotechnological approaches, as well as processing and cooking methods, have been found to have significant impacts on arsenic levels in rice from farms to the table.

Thiourea supplementation mediated reduction of grain arsenic in rice (Oryza sativa L.) cultivars: A two year field study

Munish Kumar Upadhyay et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that thiourea significantly enhances the growth and yield of rice plants in arsenic-contaminated fields, reducing arsenic concentrations in different plant parts. Additionally, thiourea supplementation also decreased the potential health risks associated with arsenic exposure, making it a viable option for safe rice cultivation in contaminated environments.

Arsenic enrichment and its natural background in groundwater at the proximity of active floodplains of Ganga River, northern India

Abdur Rahman et al.

Summary: Arsenic contamination in groundwater is a critical issue globally, with around 40 million people living in hazardous zones with arsenic levels exceeding the permissible limit. The study in Northern India's Ganga basin identified sources of arsenic and estimated natural background levels to assess and control groundwater pollution. The research also highlighted the impact of carbonate weathering and high pH values on arsenic release in groundwater.

Arsenic dynamics and flux assessment under drying-wetting irrigation and enhanced microbial diversity in paddy soils: A four year study in Bengal delta plain

Arnab Majumdar et al.

Summary: The study revealed that dry-wet irrigation can effectively reduce the bioavailability of arsenic in paddy field soils, with findings from experiments conducted between 2016 and 2019 showing the impact of dry-wet irrigation on arsenic flux. Plants grown in dry-wet fields with more rigid vascular structures were associated with lower arsenic bioavailability.

Aerosol characteristics from earth observation systems: A comprehensive investigation over South Asia (2000?2019)

Alaa Mhawish et al.

Summary: The study found an increasing trend in aerosol loading over South Asia from 2000 to 2019, with the highest aerosol loading observed during the monsoon season. Natural aerosol emissions and local anthropogenic emissions were identified as the main drivers of high AOD during monsoon and pre-monsoon seasons. High humidity during the monsoon season favored the hygroscopic growth of particles, leading to higher AOD values. The high spatial resolutions of MODIS/MAIAC and MISR aerosol products enabled the identification of previously unobserved aerosol hotspots.
