Convection-permitting modeling over the Tibetan Plateau improves the simulation of Meiyu Rainfall during the 2011 Yangtze Plain flood

Yuanyuan Ma et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that convection-permitting modeling (CPM) over the Tibetan Plateau can better reproduce regional climate, leading to improved simulation of typical Meiyu rainfall in the Yangtze Plain. These improvements are mainly attributed to the detailed representation of the complex topography over the Tibetan Plateau.

Catchment-wide validated assessment of combined sewer overflows (CSOs) in a mediterranean coastal area and possible disinfection methods to mitigate microbial contamination

Paolo Crocetti et al.

Summary: The first phase of the study assessed the environmental impact of combined sewer overflow events in Central Italy, with E. coli being identified as the main pollutant source. In the second phase, the effectiveness of various disinfection methods on these overflow events was investigated, with ozone and performic acid showing better removal efficiency for bacteria.

Complexing characteristics between Cu(II) ions and dissolved organic matter in combined sewer overflows: Implications for the removal of heavy metals by enhanced coagulation

Zhen-liang Liao et al.

Summary: Enhanced coagulation is widely used to remove heavy metal ions from combined sewer overflows (CSOs), but faces challenges in removing HMs bound to DOM components with small molecular weight. This study explores the MW-based complexing characteristics between Cu(II) ions and CSO-DOM components, showing that Cu(II) ions bound to CSO-DOM are mainly distributed in the MW range of <5 kDa, making them difficult to remove via coagulation. The study also highlights the impact of concentration effect and molecular composition on the MW distribution of Cu(II) ions bound to CSO-DOM, with humic-like components showing high binding stability and capacity with Cu(II) ions.

Not all SuDS are created equal: Impact of different approaches on combined sewer overflows

Prabhat Joshi et al.

Summary: SuDS play a crucial role in stormwater management by reducing runoff volume, increasing runoff concentration time, and improving drainage system capacity. This study evaluated the potential and cost-effectiveness of SuDS in reducing combined sewer overflows (CSOs) in a small urban catchment. Results showed that SuDS deployment can effectively attenuate CSO volume and is a cost-effective retrofit option for controlling CSOs.

Identification of new eligible indicator organisms for combined sewer overflow via 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing in Kanda River, Tokyo

Daniel Ekhlas et al.

Summary: This study identified new pollution indicators through comparing microbial communities in samples from an urban river in Tokyo under different climatic conditions and the influent and effluent of domestic wastewater treatment plants. The study also observed a reduction in microbial diversity in CSO-contaminated samples. The results suggest Bacteroides spp. as a novel indicator of sewage pollution in surface waters.

Migration and transformation of nitrogen in sediment-water system within storm sewers

Cuiyun Liu et al.

Summary: In the sediment-water system of storm sewers, the migration of nitrogen and its biological transformation were investigated. The results showed that in aerobic environments, nitrogen was mainly transformed through ammonification and nitrification, while in anoxic environments, the transformation was dominated by ammonification with inhibitions in nitrification.

New insights into restoring microbial communities by side-stream supersaturated oxygenation to improve the resilience of rivers affected by combined sewer overflows

Qiuheng Zhu et al.

Summary: CSOs are a major contributor to urban river pollution, and reducing their environmental impacts and improving water self-purification capacity are crucial. The study applied SSS oxygenation to restore microbial function in CSO-affected rivers, leading to significant improvements in water quality and sediment microbial community. The results provide new insights into ecological restoration of rivers impacted by CSOs.
