Water depth control on n-alkane distribution and organic carbon isotope in mid-latitude Asian lakes

Jiawei Jiang et al.

Summary: The relative proportion of mid-chain to long chain n-alkane homologues and isotopic compositions of total organic carbon have been proposed as lake-level proxies, based on their relationship with submerged aquatic plants. The study in mid-latitude Asia suggests that these proxies can be used to infer lake-level changes, but other influencing factors need to be considered before downcore reconstructions. Combining the P-aq and δC-13(org) indicators could improve the reliability of paleohydrological reconstructions.

Centennial-scale age offsets of plant wax n-alkanes in Adirondack lake sediments

Erika J. Freimuth et al.

Summary: This study aims to quantify and compare C-14 age offsets of plant wax n-alkanes among lakes in the same region, and to determine if drainage and lake basin differences influence these offsets. The research suggests that age offsets in lakes are likely due to reworking of older n-alkanes stored in drainage basin sediments, with minimal catchment soils leading to reduced age distortion of climate signals in plant wax isotopic records.

Climate control on terrestrial biospheric carbon turnover

Timothy Eglinton et al.

Summary: Terrestrial vegetation and soils hold significantly more carbon than the atmosphere. Human activities impacting these reserves may exacerbate climate change uncertainties, particularly in extrapolating point-source observations to ecosystem-scale budgets. The turnover of organic carbon in river basins is influenced by mean annual temperature and precipitation, with implications for soil organic carbon vulnerability on a global scale. The scaling of riverine biospheric-carbon ages with soil OC turnover reveals the potential for constraints on carbon dynamics across broad spatial scales.

Coupling of stable carbon isotopic signature of methane and ebullitive fluxes in northern temperate lakes

Shoji D. Thottathil et al.

Summary: Stable isotopic analysis is a popular method for understanding methane emissions in aquatic environments, yet the lack of concurrent measurements of isotopes and fluxes limits the ability to establish a connection between emission rates and isotopic signatures. Our study on northern temperate lakes found that higher methane emissions were sustained by acetoclastic methanogenesis and correlated strongly with isotopic variability. Further research is needed to account for different emission pathways and their isotopic signature to accurately allocate methane source signature in northern lakes.
