Microwave-assisted condensation of bio-based hydroxymethylfurfural and acetone over recyclable hydrotalcite-related materials

Alberto Tampierr et al.

Summary: The study investigates the microwave-assisted neat aldol condensation of biomass-derived platform chemical HMF and acetone over hydrotalcite-based catalysts, achieving high conversions and selective product formation. Different basic properties of heterogeneous catalysts derived from the same parent hydrotalcite were tested, with successful catalyst recycling strategies explored. The most active catalyst, a meixnerite-type solid, showed low activity loss upon recycling.

Natural mineral bentonite as catalyst for efficient isomerization of biomass-derived glucose to fructose in water

Xin Ye et al.

Summary: This study investigated the influence of the textural and acid-base properties of bentonite on glucose isomerization reaction, showing that Bromsted base was responsible for the isomerization. The highest fructose yield of 39.2% with 86.3% selectivity was achieved, and alkaline rinse and calcination were able to recover most of the spent catalyst's catalytic activity.

Molecular H2O promoted catalytic bicarbonate reduction with methanol into formate over Pd0.5Cu0.5/C under mild hydrothermal conditions

Xiaoguang Wang et al.

Summary: The direct reduction of bicarbonate to value-added organics under mild hydrothermal conditions using a Pd0.5Cu0.5/C catalyst demonstrated high efficiency and selectivity in formate production. Water molecules not only provided hydrogen for bicarbonate reduction, but also enhanced catalytic performance of Pd0.5Cu0.5/C for methanol activation as confirmed by DFT calculations and isotopic labelling studies.
