Synthesis, microstructure, and mechanical properties of novel high entropy carbonitrides

Yichen Wang et al.

Summary: A series of novel high entropy ceramics were synthesized using spark plasma sintering, and the effect of the nitrogen-to-carbon ratio on their microstructure, phase compositions, bonding characteristics, and mechanical properties was investigated. The results showed that the lattice parameter and theoretical density of the ceramics increased with increasing nitrogen ratio, while the grain size remained unchanged. The hardness and modulus of the ceramics decreased with increasing nitrogen ratio, but were still higher than the rule of mixture values.

A novel in-situ exothermic assisted sintering high entropy Al2O3/(NbTaMoW)C composites: Microstructure and mechanical properties

Diqiang Liu et al.

Summary: A new Al2O3/(NbTaMoW)C composite was designed in this study using an in-situ exothermic reaction method. The resulting composite exhibited a unique microstructure with high entropy carbide and Al2O3 phases, and a noncoherent interface between the two phases which enhanced the mechanical properties such as flexural strength and fracture toughness. The presence of an interlocking structure and inhomogeneous temperature distribution contributed to the improved properties of the composites compared to traditional (NbTaMoW)C materials.

High-entropy carbide ceramics with refined microstructure and enhanced thermal conductivity by the addition of graphite

Xiao-Feng Wei et al.

Summary: The study comprehensively investigated the addition effect of graphite on high-entropy carbide (HEC) ceramics, showing that graphite added removed oxygen impurity, increased lattice parameter, improved densification behavior, refined HEC grains, and enhanced mechanical properties of the ceramics. Importantly, graphite addition significantly increased thermal conductivity due to the removal of oxide impurity, leading to improved thermal conductivity of the ceramics.
