Micro/nano multiscale reinforcing strategies toward extreme high-temperature applications: Take carbon/carbon composites and their coatings as the examples

Qiangang Fu et al.

Summary: Carbon fiber reinforced carbon composites (C/Cs) are promising high-temperature materials, but they are prone to destructive oxidation at elevated temperatures. Matrix modification and coating technologies are not sufficient due to brittleness of ceramics and other inherent issues. Micro/nano multiscale reinforcing strategies have been developed in the past two decades to fabricate C/Cs with high strength and excellent high-temperature stability.

Ablation resistant ZrC coating modified by polymer-derived SiC/TiC nanocomposites for ultra-high temperature application

Yuyu Zhang et al.

Summary: In order to enhance the ablation resistance of ZrC coating on SiC-coated carbon/carbon composites above 2000 degrees C, SiC/TiC nanocomposites were incorporated into the ZrC coating via supersonic atmospheric plasma spraying (SAPS), resulting in the formation of ZrC-SiC/TiC-NCs coating. The good ablation resistance of the coating is mainly attributed to the distinctive capsule-like multi-crystalline microstructure of SiC/TiC-NCs, which helps in the formation of a high viscosity and low evaporation pressure Zr-Ti-Si-O glass during ablation.

Effect of the Y2O3 amount on the oxidation behavior of ZrB2-SiC-based coatings for carbon/carbon composites

Hao Lin et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of Y2O3 addition on the oxidation resistance of ZrB2-SiC-Y2O3 coating on SiC coated carbon/carbon composites. The results show that adding Y2O3 greatly enhances the oxidation-resistant properties of the coating, leading to the formation of a dense structure and yttria stabilized zirconia, Y2Si2O7, t-ZrO2 phases. The improved oxidation resistance is attributed to the formation of a Zr-Si-Y-O glass barrier layer, reduced m-ZrO2 content, and the presence of Y2Si2O7 as a pinning phase.

High temperature oxidation resistance of Y2O3 modified ZrB2-SiC coating for carbon/carbon composites

Hanchun Ma et al.

Summary: Y2O3 modified ZrB2-SiC coatings fabricated on C/C composites by atmospheric plasma spraying demonstrated excellent oxidation resistance and thermal stability at high temperatures. The presence of Y2O3 effectively inhibited the phase transition of ZrO2, preventing cracks caused by volume expansion of the coating. The ceramic phases Y2SiO5, Y2Si2O7, and ZrSiO4 reduced the volatilization of SiO2, contributing to the overall protective performance of the coatings.

Improving the sinterability of ZrC-SiC composite powders by Mg addition

Lei Zheng et al.

Summary: In this study, core-shell-structured hybrid ZrC-SiC composite nanoparticles were successfully synthesized by adding Mg, which enhanced the sinterability of the ZrC-SiC nanoparticles. The addition of MgCl2 not only strengthened the network structure of ZrC-SiC gel, but also led to the formation of an amorphous Mg-Si-O oxide coating on the nanoparticle surfaces, enhancing the sinterability of the ZrC-SiC nanoparticles.

Effects of PyC shell thickness on the microstructure, ablation resistance of SiCnws/PyC-C/C-ZrC-SiC composites

Qinchuan He et al.

Summary: By increasing the PyC shell thickness in SiC nanowires/pyrocarbon core-shell structured composites, the density and thermal conductivity of the composites can be improved while reducing the coefficient of thermal expansion, ultimately enhancing the anti-ablation properties. However, there is an optimal PyC thickness where further increases can lead to an increase in ablation rates.

Chen Zeng et al.

Summary: Optimizing the addition order of carbon source during sol-gel process can greatly improve the properties of C/C-ZrC-SiC composites, including microstructure, mechanical property, and ablation resistance. The excellent performance is attributed to little erosion of carbon fibers and the dense matrix of ZrC-SiC ceramics obtained from adding carbon source before gelation.
