Phonophobia and brainstem excitability in migraine

Jayantee Kalita et al.

Summary: The study found that phonophobia in migraineurs may be related to lower hearing threshold and higher brainstem neuronal excitability, presenting characteristics such as lower hearing threshold, higher headache frequency, and multiple sensory triggers. Additionally, higher amplitudes of BAEP waves in migraineurs and their relationship with the frequency of headache and hearing threshold suggest the sensitization of brainstem auditory neurons.

A review of decreased sound tolerance in autism: Definitions, phenomenology, and potential mechanisms

Zachary J. Williams et al.

Summary: Atypical behavioral responses to environmental sounds are common in autistic individuals, with 50-70% of them experiencing decreased sound tolerance at some point in their lives. This symptom contributes to distress and impairment, but little is known about its phenomenology or neurocognitive underpinnings. The article synthesizes literature on DST-related conditions, proposing separating it into three distinct conditions and suggesting preliminary neurocognitive models to explain these behaviors.
