Feeding of pea leafminer larvae simultaneously activates jasmonic and salicylic acid pathways in plants to release a terpenoid for indirect defense

Jun-Nan Yang et al.

Summary: The pea leafminer, Liriomyza huidobrensis, is a significant pest for ornamental crops worldwide. Indirect defense responses of bean plants infested by female adults or larvae were compared, revealing that puncturing by adults released green leaf volatiles and terpenoids, while larval feeding induced the emission of methyl salicylate and (E,E)-4,8,12-trimethyl-1,3,7,11-tridecatetraene (TMTT). Jasmonic acid (JA) and JA-related gene expressions increased with puncturing by adults, while larval feeding activated both JA and salicylic acid (SA) pathways. The study showed that JA+SA application triggered TMTT emission and attracted parasitoids, although the complete volatile blend released by infested plants was more attractive.

Ca2+ sensor-mediated ROS scavenging suppresses rice immunity and is exploited by a fungal effector

Mingjun Gao et al.

Summary: The discovery of a conserved immune suppression network in cereals centered on the Ca2+-sensor ROD1 is significant in understanding how plants fine-tune immune homeostasis. ROD1 promotes reactive oxygen species scavenging and its disruption confers resistance to multiple pathogens. The fungal effector AvrPiz-t structurally mimics ROD1 to suppress host immunity and promote virulence, revealing a molecular framework for breeding disease-resistant, high-yield crops.

Gene regulation by long non-coding RNAs and its biological functions

Luisa Statello et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shed new light on the biogenesis and functions of long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs), showcasing their diverse roles in gene regulation and signaling pathways, particularly in the contexts of neuronal disorders, immune responses, and cancer. The discovery of unique biogenesis pathways and subcellular localizations of lncRNAs has opened up potential therapeutic avenues for targeting lncRNAs in various biological and pathophysiological conditions.

Long Noncoding RNAs in Plants

Andrzej T. Wierzbicki et al.

Summary: Plants have a diverse range of transcription machineries, with four dedicated RNA polymerases involved in producing long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) that play various regulatory roles in gene expression and response to environmental stimuli. These lncRNAs can impact gene expression by controlling chromatin accessibility, transcription, splicing, and translation.

DEAD-box helicases modulate dicing body formation in Arabidopsis

Qi Li et al.

Summary: The RNA helicases RH6, RH8, and RH12 play key roles in modulating the formation of membraneless nuclear dicing bodies (D-bodies) in Arabidopsis via liquid-liquid phase separations (LLPSs). Their accumulation decreases in the nuclei upon Turnip mosaic virus infections, leading to a decrease in D-bodies.

MES7 Modulates Seed Germination via Regulating Salicylic Acid Content in Arabidopsis

Wenrui Gao et al.

Summary: This study reveals that the SA methyl esterase MES7 regulates seed germination by altering SA content under normal and abiotic stress conditions. MES7 expression decreases significantly in imbibed seeds, and dysfunction of MES7 leads to decreased SA content. Furthermore, MES7 shows both inhibitory and stimulatory effects on seed germination under normal and salt stress conditions, respectively. The application of SA can restore the seed germination deficiencies of mes7 mutants under different conditions.
