Differentiating between hydrothermal and diagenetic carbonate using rare earth element and yttrium (REE plus Y) geochemistry: a case study from the Paleoproterozoic George Fisher massive sulfide Zn deposit, Mount Isa, Australia

Philip Rieger et al.

Summary: Carbonate minerals are common in sediment-hosted mineral deposits and their REE+Y-CN composition can provide insights into fluid chemistry and fluid-rock interactions. The differentiation of pre-ore and hydrothermal carbonates using in situ REE+Y data remains relatively untested. This study confirms that in situ REE+Y data can be used to distinguish between pre-ore and hydrothermal carbonates, providing important constraints on ore formation conditions.

Burial dolomitization driven by modified seawater and basal aquifer-sourced brines: Insights from the Middle and Upper Devonian of the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin

Jack Stacey et al.

Summary: The dolomitization in the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin was extensively studied, indicating the influence of Devonian seawater on dolomite formation and recrystallization, and the deep burial precipitation of saddle dolomite cement from(87)Sr-rich basinal brines. Interactions between basal aquifers and residual evapo-concentrated seawater were key in dolomitization processes.

Tracing seawater- and terrestrial-sourced REE signatures in detritally contaminated, diagenetically altered carbonate rocks

Qiaolin Gong et al.

Summary: The study analyzed Cambrian ooids and microbial structures in South China and found that diagenetic alterations and detrital contamination can affect the reliability of their REY signatures. Early marine cements showed seawater-like REY patterns, while detrital fractions enriched in heavy REEs were identified. The LA technique can be used for paleoceanographic reconstruction based on less altered components and provenance analysis of fine-grained particles.

Origin of dolomites in Lower-Middle Ordovician carbonate rocks in the Yingshan Formation, Gucheng Area, Tarim Basin: Evidence from petrography and geochemical data

Baiwen Huang et al.

Summary: Through a combination of various tools, the study successfully identified the types and origins of dolomites in the Yingshan Formation of the Gucheng area in the Tarim Basin, including three primary matrix dolomites and three special cements. These dolomites were formed in different burial environments, with some influenced by hydrothermal fluid mixtures.

Tracing fault-related fluids using in situ trace elements: A case study in Upper Cambrian dolostone in Gucheng area, Tarim Basin, NW China

Ziye Lu et al.

Summary: In this study of the Gucheng area, different types of dolomites were identified and the impact of hydrothermal fluids on the dolostones was analyzed. The research suggests that hydrothermal fluids may cause localized redistribution of dolomites. The Permian magmatic fluid recorded in the dolomites may be limited to fractures and unlikely significantly alter the Upper Cambrian matrix dolomite.

Regional fault-controlled shallow dolomitization of the Middle Cambrian Cathedral Formation by hydrothermal fluids fluxed through a basal clastic aquifer

Jack Stacey et al.

Summary: This study investigates the examples of hydrothermal dolomitization in the Middle Cambrian Cathedral Formation of the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin, revealing the significant role of acidic dolomite and saddle dolomite cement in kilometer-scale dolomite bodies within the carbonate platform. The findings also show the influence of geological tectonic features on the dolomitization process.
