Surfactant chemistry and polymer choice affect single-wall carbon nanotube extraction conditions in aqueous two-polymer phase extraction

Christopher M. Sims et al.

Summary: This research quantitatively determined the effects of surfactant chemistry and polymer chain length on the extraction of specific single-wall carbon nanotube (SWCNT) species in an aqueous two-polymer phase extraction (ATPE) separation. The results showed that alkyl surfactant tail length strongly affects the amount of surfactant necessary for extraction in ATPE. Substitution of different bile salts results in different surfactant packings on the SWCNTs, significantly affecting the concentrations required for extraction.

Optical Property Tuning of Single-Wall Carbon Nanotubes by Endohedral Encapsulation of a Wide Variety of Dielectric Molecules

Jochen Campo et al.

Summary: Specific and tunable modification of the optical properties of single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) is demonstrated through direct encapsulation of guest molecules with varying dielectric constants into the nanotube interior. The insertion of over 30 different compounds covering a wide range of dielectric constants results in a monotonic energy reduction of optical transitions with increasing dielectric constant. The overall trend of filler dielectric on nanotube optical properties, including fluorescence intensity and line narrowing, is observed with some exceptions that defy existing theory.

Assessing the reliability of the Raman peak counting method for the characterization of SWCNT diameter distributions: a cross characterization with TEM

Alice Castan et al.

Summary: Resonant Raman spectroscopy is a widely used technique for characterizing single-walled carbon nanotubes, providing direct information on their structure. This study compared diameter distributions obtained through Raman peak counting with those from transmission electron microscopy, revealing differences due to chirality-dependence and the limited excitation wavelengths used. The effects of substrate and TEM-related biases were also discussed.

En route to single-step, two-phase purification of carbon nanotubes facilitated by high-throughput spectroscopy

Summary: A new method using ATPE has been discovered to achieve single-chirality enrichment of SWCNTs. By adjusting the surfactant system, nearly-monochiral fractions of SWCNTs can be obtained, and the mechanics of the separation process can be probed through spectroscopic analysis.
