Toward Confined Carbyne with Tailored Properties

Lei Shi et al.

Summary: By controlling the diameter of single-walled carbon nanotubes, it is possible to grow confined carbyne with a defined and tunable band gap. The metallicity of the tubes has minimal influence on the formation of carbyne, while the diameter plays a major role in the growth process. The properties of confined carbyne can be independently tailored, primarily determined by its interaction with the carbon nanotube.

Raman resonance tuning of quaterthiophene in filled carbon nanotubes at high pressures

R. S. Alencar et al.

Summary: Filling carbon nanotubes with molecules is a promising approach for developing electronically modified one-dimensional hybrid structures by tuning energy levels with external parameters. Quaterthiophene molecules confined in single-walled carbon nanotubes exhibit piezo-Raman-resonance behavior, with pressure-induced enhancement of vibrational patterns. The pressure-induced nanotube radial collapse leads to an increase in resonance channels, explaining the observed piezo-resonance scenario.

Summary: The temperature dependence of the Raman C-band frequency of linear carbon chains can be used to evaluate their thermal properties within the Debye formalism, providing universal relations for quantities such as internal energy, heat capacity, coefficient of thermal expansion, thermal strain, and Gruneisen parameter in terms of the number of carbon atoms and temperature.

Anti-Stokes Raman Scattering of Single Carbyne Chains

Cla Duri Tschannen et al.

Summary: In this study, anti-Stokes Raman scattering of single carbyne chains confined inside double-walled carbon nanotubes was investigated using tip-enhanced Raman scattering (TERS). The temperature dependence of carbyne's Raman spectrum was studied and laser-induced heating was quantified based on the anti-Stokes/Stokes ratio. Due to its molecular size and large Raman cross section, carbyne shows great promise for local temperature monitoring and potential applications in nanoelectronics and biology.

Flat-to-Flat Polymerization of Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes under High Pressure Mediated by Carbon Chain Encapsulation

R. S. Ferreira et al.

Summary: This work focused on studying single-walled carbon nanotube bundles filled with linear carbon chains under high-pressure conditions. New polymerized high-pressure phases of carbon nanotubes were explored using density functional theory (DFT), revealing changes in the circular cross section of carbon nanotubes. The study also identified the production of new polymerized carbon nanotube phases characterized by sp(3) bonds in flat regions of collapsed phases after high-pressure cycles.
