Hollow nanosphere-doped bacterial cellulose and polypropylene wound dressings: Biomimetic nanocatalyst mediated antibacterial therapy

Shumin Zhang et al.

Summary: Reactive oxygen species (ROS) have been demonstrated to be effective against bacterial infections. Inspired by the biocatalytic ability of nanozymes in regulating ROS levels, a hollow mesoporous nanocatalyst with multienzyme-mimicking activity was developed. The nanocatalyst can catalyze glucose into highly reactive hydrogen radicals, resulting in remarkable antibacterial ability. A novel antibacterial wound dressing was fabricated by assembling the nanocatalyst on bacterial cellulose enveloped polypropylene composites, which showed outstanding moisture retention ability and breathability, as well as remarkable biocompatibility and bacteria inactivation ability. In vivo studies demonstrated that the wound dressing can effectively promote wound healing caused by bacterial infections.
