By-Products from Food Industry as a Promising Alternative for the Conventional Fillers for Wood-Polymer Composites

Aleksander Hejna et al.

Summary: This study investigated the potential of using food-industry by-products such as brewers' spent grain and coffee silverskin as alternatives for conventional wood flour in wood-polymer composites. The results showed that partial or complete substitution of wood flour with these by-products improved melt flowability and ductility of the composites, but had an impact on their strength and thermal stability. The presence of proteins and lipids in the fillers acted as plasticizers, affecting the mechanical properties of the composites.

Polyurethane Composites Reinforced with Walnut Shell Filler Treated with Perlite, Montmorillonite and Halloysite

Sylwia Czlonka et al.

Summary: By adding walnut shell fillers modified with various mineral compounds, the properties of polyurethane composites can be enhanced, particularly in terms of mechanical, thermal, and flame retardant properties. Composites filled with halloysite functionalized walnut shell filler exhibit the most significant improvements in performance, including compressive strength, flexural strength, and impact strength.

SBR Vulcanizates Filled with Modified Ground Tire Rubber

Katarzyna Klajn et al.

Summary: This study compares three different methods of modifying ground tire rubber (GTR) and their effects on the mechanical properties of vulcanizates. The addition of modified GTR particles results in increased stiffness and crosslink density of the vulcanizates, but also leads to decreased friction and increased abrasive wear.

Development and Characterization of Bioactive Poly(butylene-succinate) Films Modified with Quercetin for Food Packaging Applications

Lukasz Lopusiewicz et al.

Summary: The fabrication and characterization of PBS films enriched with the natural polyphenolic antioxidant-quercetin were reported in this study. The addition of quercetin led to significant changes in color, opacity, and UV-blocking effect of the films, while the mechanical properties slightly decreased. The PBS-quercetin films exhibited excellent antioxidant and bactericidal activities, showing potential for active food packaging applications.
