Early Paleozoic accretionary orogens along the Western Gondwana margin

Sebastian Oriolo et al.

Summary: Early Paleozoic accretionary orogens in Western Gondwana were characterized by continuous subduction, high-temperature metamorphism, and crustal extension. Retreating-mode accretionary orogens played a key role in the Early Paleozoic evolution of Gondwana, with slab roll back influencing geodynamic processes. This study highlights the importance of understanding the common tectonic processes in Western Gondwana orogens during the Early Paleozoic.

Maximum depositional age estimation revisited

Pieter Vermeesch

Summary: In a recent review, nine methods of estimating the maximum depositional age (MDA) of siliclastic rocks using detrital geochronology were compared, revealing biases in most methods. The Maximum Likelihood Age (MLA) algorithm, based on a binary mixture of distributions, was found to successfully estimate MDA with less bias than ad hoc methods. This approach has potential applications beyond detrital geochronology.

When zircon drowns: Elusive geochronological record of water-fluxed orthogneiss melting in the Velay dome (Massif Central, France)

Simon Couzinie et al.

Summary: Zircon U-Pb geochronology is used to understand melting events in the continental crust. A study in the Velay dome region of France found limited zircon records of the Variscan anatectic event. Partial melting of orthogneisses occurred at high temperatures influenced by external water, resulting in restricted new zircon growth.
