Practical Indicators for Risk of Airborne Transmission in Shared Indoor Environments and Their Application to COVID-19 Outbreaks

Z. Peng et al.

Summary: Some infectious diseases, including COVID-19, can undergo airborne transmission. Two indicators of infection risk are proposed, which combine key factors that control airborne disease transmission indoors. COVID-19 outbreaks show a clear trend consistent with airborne infection and enable recommendations to minimize transmission risk.

COVID-19 Cluster Linked to Aerosol Transmission of SARS-CoV-2 via Floor Drains

Taewon Han et al.

Summary: The study investigated the possibility of aerosol transmission of SARS-CoV-2 within an apartment complex where residents tested positive for the virus without direct contact with other infected individuals. The results suggest that transmission may occur between different floors of the building through aerosols and nonfunctioning drain traps.

Multizonal modeling of SARS-CoV-2 aerosol dispersion in a virtual office building

Prateek Shrestha et al.

Summary: The study simulated the indoor dispersion of airborne SARS-CoV-2 aerosols in a detailed medium office building, finding that unventilated stairwells could have higher concentrations of viruses. Morning and evening flushing of conditioned zones were not very effective, while maintaining a high percentage of outdoor air, using various disinfection methods, were effective strategies to prevent airborne viral contamination.

Multizone modeling of pressure difference control analyses for an infectious disease hospital

Jiamin Guo et al.

Summary: In this study, models based on a real infectious disease hospital were constructed and verified by the multizone model on Modelica. An appropriate active pressure difference control strategy for VAVs in NPIW was explored and applied in a hospital floor model to analyze the impact of pressure differences among multiple rooms by VAV operation. The results showed that pressure difference deviations could be reduced by 9.98%-25.73% for different leakage paths of the isolation room with this control strategy. The study emphasizes the importance of reducing airtightness at zone junctions and external windows to enhance their ability to resist pressure difference interference.

Dismantling myths on the airborne transmission of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2)

J. W. Tang et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has caused significant disruption globally, highlighting the importance of understanding the transmission mechanisms of SARS-CoV-2. Confusion over the meaning of 'airborne' in discussions of transmission stems from past evidence and mythological beliefs, but there is evidence indicating that SARS-CoV-2 can be transmitted through various sizes of airborne particles.

Jin Pan et al.

Summary: The study found that vacuum bags performed the best in terms of filtration efficiency, while thin acrylic and face shields performed the worst. The fit of the mask is crucial for both inward and outward protection efficiency. A recommendation is made for a three-layer mask for optimal filtration efficiency.

Tracing surface and airborne SARS-CoV-2 RNA inside public buses and subway trains

Teresa Moreno et al.

Summary: A study on public transport in Barcelona during the summer of 2020 found traces of SARS-CoV-2 viral RNA in surface and air samples, with more viral remnants on bus surfaces compared to trains. Although signs of viral RNA were detected, they were considered unlikely to be infectious. Vigilant attention to ventilation systems and regular disinfection of vehicles are necessary to effectively eliminate viral traces, especially during peak COVID-19 periods.

Investigation of potential aerosol transmission and infectivity of SARS-CoV-2 through central ventilation systems

Leonard F. Pease et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the concentrations and probabilities of infection for both building interior and exterior exposure sources using a well-mixed model in a multiroom building served by a central air handling system. It found that slower air change rates reduce infectivity in connected rooms, filtration lowers the concentration and probability of infection the most in connected rooms, and increasing the outdoor air to 33% or using MERV-13 filter can significantly decrease infectivity in connected rooms.
