Breastfeeding Duration in a Low-Income Sample Is Associated With Child Diet Quality at Age Three

Nancy S. Weinfield et al.

Summary: This study focused on the association between breastfeeding duration and later diet quality in a low-income population. The results showed that longer breastfeeding duration during infancy was associated with better diet quality at 36 months, particularly with greater consumption of mature/dried beans and peas.

A new look at early exposure to the flavors of the available vegetables as foundational mechanism of vegetable consumption habits and recipes of vegetables-based dishes

Paloma Rohlfs Dominguez

Summary: The flavor of the maternal diet is transferred to women's amniotic fluid and breast milk, affecting the early exposure of developing babies to flavor-related information. Research has shown that exposure to vegetable flavors during prenatal and early postnatal stages is linked to increased acceptance, liking, and preference for vegetables in children. Additionally, the availability of certain vegetables due to geographic reasons may also influence these effects, suggesting a new direction for research in the future.

Breastfeeding duration in infancy and dietary intake in childhood and adolescence

Fatima Kheir et al.

Summary: The study found associations between breastfeeding duration and dietary intake in childhood, with children breastfed > 6 months more likely to consume more vegetables and avoid sugar-sweetened beverages. However, these associations were no longer present in adolescence, and no associations were found for fruit intake or overall diet quality.

Summary: Consumption of dried fruits is associated with higher diet quality and greater intakes of underconsumed nutrients. Consumers of dried fruits had higher diet quality scores and consumed more carbohydrates, dietary fiber, potassium, and polyunsaturated fats on days when dried fruits were consumed.

Summary: Infant feeding practices are thought to influence food acceptance and preferences, but their impact on children's dietary patterns in school age is not significant. Larger studies adjusting for potential confounders associated with breastfeeding are needed.
