Trends, Sociodemographic and Hospital-Level Factors Associated With Palliative Care Utilization Among Multiple Myeloma Patients Using the National Inpatient Sample (2016-2018)

Inimfon Jackson et al.

Summary: The study found that MM patients aged 70 and above were more likely to receive palliative care, while non-Hispanic black patients and those using the Medicare plan were relatively less likely to utilize palliative care. In addition to patient age and insurance type, factors such as hospital region, location, patient disposition, admission type, length of stay, and number of comorbidities also influence palliative care utilization.

Regional and age differences in specialised palliative care for patients with pancreatic cancer

Mathilde Adsersen et al.

Summary: Despite national recommendations, disparities in specialised palliative care admittance for pancreatic cancer patients exist in Denmark. From 2011 to 2018, more patients were admitted to SPC, but there were marked differences between regions of residence and age groups. The short period of time patients spend in SPC raises concerns about the integration of early palliative care in the Danish healthcare system for pancreatic cancer patients.

Hospitalization at the end of life in patients with multiple myeloma

Saqib Abbasi et al.

Summary: This study shows that patients with multiple myeloma who die in the hospital often require blood transfusions and have a high infection burden. Palliative care and hospice involvement has increased over time but remains low, and inpatient mortality has decreased but MM patients still die in the hospital at a higher rate than the general population.
