The convergence and divergence of episodic and semantic functions across lateral parietal cortex

Gina F. Humphreys et al.

Summary: This study revealed the different roles of lateral parietal cortex (LPC) in episodic memory retrieval and semantic memory retrieval from a functional and connectivity perspective. The findings showed that ventral LPC was positively activated during episodic retrieval but not during semantic memory retrieval, while dorsal LPC was activated in various tasks and positively correlated with task difficulty. Furthermore, a gradient of connectivity along the dorsal-ventral and anterior-posterior axis was found in the angular gyrus (AG).

Longitudinal changes in behaviour, mood and functional capacity in the primary progressive aphasia variants

David Foxe et al.

Summary: This study found distinct profiles in behavior, mood, and functional capacity among different variants of Primary Progressive Aphasia (PPA), which go beyond the primary language disorder. Caregivers of semantic variant PPA reported greater behavioral disturbances than other variants, with memory problems also more severe in semantic and logopenic variants compared to non-fluent variant. These findings have important implications for clinical management and caregiver education in PPA.

The Left Angular Gyrus Is Causally Involved in Context-dependent Integration and Associative Encoding during Narrative Reading

Francesca M. Branzi et al.

Summary: This study investigated the role of the left angular gyrus (AG) in language processing using TMS, finding that disruption to the left AG impairs the integration of contextual information and encoding of information during language processing. Results showed that TMS over the left AG during reading tasks impaired the formation of integrated context-target representation, providing evidence of a causal link between left AG function, on-line information integration, and associative encoding during language processing.

New insights into atypical Alzheimer's disease in the era of biomarkers

Jonathan Graff-Radford et al.

Summary: Most Alzheimer's disease patients present with memory problems, but a significant proportion of young-onset cases exhibit atypical symptoms like visual, language, executive, behavioral, or motor issues. With advancements in biomarkers and new diagnostic criteria, early detection and tailored treatment plans are now becoming more accessible for these individuals, offering them better care and support. Research into atypical Alzheimer's has unveiled diverse neuropathology across the disease spectrum, providing insights into the vulnerability of different brain networks and potentially impacting understanding of typical late-onset Alzheimer's disease.

Summary: This study revealed that nonamyloid lvPPA is the most frequent variant associated with GRN mutations, followed by nfvPPA and mixed forms, showing that the language network may be affected at different levels. GRN testing is crucial for both familial and sporadic PPA patients, suggesting implications for future GRN gene-specific therapies.

Summary: Episodic amnesia has been found as a potential clinical feature in Logopenic Progressive Aphasia (LPA) patients, even persisting when structured probing is provided. Autobiographical memory impairments in LPA are related to gray matter intensity decrease in predominantly posterior parietal brain regions implicated in memory retrieval.

Hearing and dementia: from ears to brain

Jeremy C. S. Johnson et al.

Summary: The association between hearing impairment and dementia poses a significant public health challenge, with potential for earlier diagnosis and prevention. Neurodegenerative pathologies are predicted to target the auditory brain and damage hearing function early. It is important to reconsider the role of auditory cognitive function in dementia and develop new auditory tests for early diagnosis.
