Up-regulation of miR-20a weakens inflammation and apoptosis in high-glucose-induced renal tubular cell mediating diabetic kidney disease by repressing CXCL8 expression

Yang Bai et al.

Summary: This study determined the expression pattern and biological roles of miR-20a in diabetic kidney disease (DKD). miR-20a over-expression enhanced cell proliferation, inhibited cell apoptosis, and suppressed the inflammatory response. Additionally, miR-20a may regulate HG-induced renal proximal tubular inflammatory injury through the regulation of CXCL8 expression and the MEK/ERK pathway.

Adiposity and risks of vascular and non-vascular mortality among Chinese adults with type 2 diabetes: a 10-year prospective study

Andri Iona et al.

Summary: Among relatively lean Chinese adults with diabetes, there were contrasting associations between adiposity with CVD incidence and with mortality. The high mortality risk at low and high BMI levels highlights, if causal, the importance of maintaining normal weight among people with diabetes.

Genetic characterization of Shigatoxigenic and enteropathogenicEscherichia coliO80:H2 from diarrhoeic and septicaemic calves and relatedness to human ShigatoxigenicE. coliO80:H2

Summary: The study identified EHEC O80:H2 in diarrhoeic and septicaemic calves in Belgium, which are genetically related to human EHEC. The findings support the need to assess cattle as a potential source of contamination of humans by EHEC O80:H2 and to understand the evolution of these bacteria.

The PINK1/PARK2/optineurin pathway of mitophagy is activated for protection in septic acute kidney injury

Summary: The study demonstrated the induction of mitophagy in septic AKI models and revealed the role of the PINK1/PARK2 pathway. Mitophagy during sepsis plays a beneficial role in tubular cell survival and renal function.

Mefunidone ameliorates diabetic kidney disease in STZ and db/db mice

Yupeng Jiang et al.

Summary: The study found that MFD treatment significantly reduced pathological changes observed by PAS staining, PASM staining, and Masson staining in vivo. Further elucidation revealed that MFD treatment notably restored podocyte function, alleviated inflammation, abated ROS generation, inhibited the TGF-beta 1/SAMD2/3 pathway, suppressed the phosphorylation levels of MAPKs (ERK1/2, JNK, and P38), and reduced epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition(EMT).

Inhibition of aerobic glycolysis alleviates sepsis-induced acute kidney injury by promoting lactate/Sirtuin 3/AMPK-regulated autophagy

Chuyi Tan et al.

Summary: Inhibition of aerobic glycolysis protects against sepsis-induced AKI by promoting autophagy via the lactate/SIRT3/AMPK pathway. Sepsis or LPS enhance aerobic glycolysis, while the inhibitor 2-DG downregulates glycolysis and improves kidney injury induced by sepsis by enhancing cellular autophagy.

Management of diabetes and hyperglycaemia in the hospital

Francisco J. Pasquel et al.

Summary: Hyperglycaemia in hospitalized patients, regardless of diabetes status, is associated with increased morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs. Insulin therapy is recommended for inpatient management, with various non-insulin drug combinations also showing potential benefits for appropriate glycemic control. Ongoing research is exploring the impact of emerging diabetes technologies and remote inpatient diabetes management during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Sitagliptin activates the p62-Keap1-Nrf2 signalling pathway to alleviate oxidative stress and excessive autophagy in severe acute pancreatitis-related acute lung injury

Lingming Kong et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that SIT reduces oxidative stress and excessive autophagy in SAP-ALI through the p62-Keap1-Nrf2 signaling pathway and nuclear translocation of Nrf2. However, the anti-inflammatory effect of SIT is reduced in Nrf2 knockout mice and Nrf2-knockdown BEAS-2B cells, leading to ROS accumulation and excessive autophagy.
