Geo-analysis: the distribution of community health workers in relation to the HIV prevalence in KwaZulu-Natal province, South Africa

G. E. Khumalo et al.

Summary: This study reveals an inequality in the distribution of community health workers (CHWs), which may be associated with inequalities in the provision of HIV related services. Strengthening the response to the HIV epidemic through the appropriate distribution of CHWs is critical, especially in districts with high levels of HIV prevalence and poverty.

Using mobile phone data to reveal risk flow networks underlying the HIV epidemic in Namibia

Eugenio Valdano et al.

Summary: The study shows that in Namibia, population mobility plays a significant role in the spread of HIV, with around 40% of the risk driven by mobility. Various constituencies import and export risk to different degrees, and some constituencies export high levels of risk while having below average prevalence rates. Large-scale networks of mobility-driven risk flows underlie generalized HIV epidemics in sub-Saharan Africa, highlighting the need for innovative control strategies focusing on disrupting risk flows to eliminate HIV.

Prevalence of Untreated HIV and Associated Risk Behaviors Among the Sexual Partners of Recent Migrants and Long-term Residents in Rakai, Uganda

Jennifer E. Brophy et al.

Summary: The study found that compared to long-term residents, sexual partners of in-migrants were less likely to be marital, more likely to span community boundaries, and had shorter duration. In-migrants reported more sexual partners and were less likely to know their partner's HIV status or disclose their own HIV status. In cohabitating couples, in-migrants were more likely to partner with untreated HIV-positive individuals.
