Transcriptome Analysis of Near-Isogenic Lines Provides Novel Insights into Genes Associated with Seed Low-Temperature Germination Ability in Maize (Zea mays L.)

Xuhui Li et al.

Summary: In this study, the researchers introgressed a major QTL, qp1ER1-1, for low temperature germination ability (LTGA) from a tolerant maize line into a sensitive line to generate near isogenic lines. They found that the introgression of qp1ER1-1 improved the LTGA of the near isogenic lines when germinated under cold temperature conditions. Transcriptome analysis revealed the specific expression of LTGA-related genes in the tolerant lines, and identified 27 common LTGA genes that could be located within the confidence interval of qp1ER1-1. This study provides new insight into the molecular mechanism of maize seed LTGA and aids in the cloning of the qp1ER1-1 gene.

Transcriptome Profiling of Maize (Zea mays L.) Leaves Reveals Key Cold-Responsive Genes, Transcription Factors, and Metabolic Pathways Regulating Cold Stress Tolerance at the Seedling Stage

Joram Kiriga Waititu et al.

Summary: The study conducted comparative transcriptome profiling to unravel the molecular mechanisms underlying maize cold stress tolerance, identifying differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and critical pathways associated with cold response in cold-tolerant and cold-sensitive inbred lines. Functional analysis highlighted the enrichment of signaling pathways, carotenoid, lipid metabolism, transcription factors, peroxisome, and amino acid metabolism. The study provides valuable insights for understanding maize response to cold stress at the seedling stage and potential breeding programs for cold tolerance.

The lincRNA XH123 is involved in cotton cold-stress regulation

Zeyi Cao et al.

Summary: The study characterized a long noncoding RNA XH123 in cotton seedlings, which plays a role in defense against cold stress. Silencing XH123 increased sensitivity to cold stress, leading to chloroplast damage and elevated levels of reactive oxygen species. These results suggest that XH123 is actively involved in regulating cold stress in cotton during the seedling stage.
