The Burden of Early Childhood Caries in Children under 5 Years Old in the European Union and Associated Risk Factors: An Ecological Study

Summary: This study examined the burden of early childhood caries (ECC) among children under 5 years old in EU countries and its relationship with risk factors, revealing a consistently higher YLDs rate in Eastern EU countries over time. Significant associations were found between sugar consumption, GDP per capita, urbanization, and YLDs rate, particularly in Eastern EU countries. The study suggests the need for innovative and personalized policy approaches to address the increasing burden of ECC in the EU.

Life-conditions and anthropometric variables as risk factors for oral health in children in Ladakh, a cross-sectional survey

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate dental caries severity among schoolchildren in Zanskar Valley, Ladakh, India and its association with anthropometric factors and background variables. Significant relationships were found between caries severity and gender, waist circumference, BMI, oral hygiene frequency, and self-reported chewing problems. Low BMI values and reduced waist circumference were identified as main predictors for caries risk.

Oral Health Inequalities among Indigenous and Non-Indigenous Children

Summary: This study explored socioeconomic inequalities in dental caries experience and management among Indigenous and non-Indigenous children in Australia. The results revealed that social gradients were more pronounced among Indigenous children, with socioeconomic disadvantage potentially leading to higher disease experience and increased dental service utilization. Addressing upstream determinants of health could help mitigate racial inequalities in oral health between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.
