Molecular-based assessment of diversity and population structure of Sporothrix spp. clinical isolates from Espirito Santo-Brazil

Isabela da Cruz Bahiense Rocha et al.

Summary: This study assessed the genetic diversity and mating-type distribution of Sporothrix isolates recovered from human and feline cases of sporotrichosis in Espirito Santo, Brazil. The results showed that S brasiliensis was more prevalent in urban areas, likely originating from Rio de Janeiro, and has significantly broadened its area of occurrence. The presence of both sexual idiomorphs in both species suggests they are heterothallic, indicating a potential for genetic diversification and adaptation in these emerging pathogens.

The Mitogenomes of Ophiostoma minus and Ophiostoma piliferum and Comparisons With Other Members of the Ophiostomatales

Abdullah Zubaer et al.

Summary: Fungi belonging to the Ophiostomatales are of economic concern due to their blue-stain and plant pathogen characteristics. The study of mitogenomes in this group revealed both conservation and variability in gene content and order, with examples of complex introns and differences in genome sizes attributed to the presence or absence of introns. Taxonomic revisions within the Ophiostomatales have clarified some lineages but some remain unresolved, such as the polyphyletic nature of genera like Raffaelea and the distinction between Sporothrix sensu stricto and Ophiostoma.

Multivariable association discovery in population-scale meta-omics studies

Himel Mallick et al.

Summary: The paper introduces a statistical model called MaAsLin 2 for multivariable associations in population-scale microbial community studies, which has been extensively validated. The authors highlight the importance and challenges of multivariable association analysis in microbiome research, and propose a new method to handle such complex data.

Six new species of Sporothrix from hardwood trees in Poland

Agnieszka Ostafinska et al.

Summary: Sporothrix, a monophyletic lineage within the Ophiostomatales, is found in diverse habitats including forest trees, soil, bark beetles, mites, and Basidiomycota. Six new undescribed Sporothrix species were characterized in this study, with two belonging to S. gossypina-complex, one to S. stenoceras-complex. These species were recovered from hardwood habitats in Poland, associated with insects, wounds, or woodpecker cavities.
