Current flow and dissolved oxygen in a full-scale stocked fish-cage with and without lice shielding skirts

Kristbjorg Edda Jonsdottir et al.

Summary: Research shows that using shielding skirts in Atlantic Salmon sea-cages can affect the current flow and dissolved oxygen levels within the cage, but does not influence the vertical swimming behavior of the salmon. The dissolved oxygen level inside the cage improves shortly after the removal of the skirt.

Tag use to monitor fish behaviour in aquaculture: a review of benefits, problems and solutions

Georgia Macaulay et al.

Summary: Studies have shown that tagging fish for monitoring in aquaculture settings can lead to higher mortality rates, especially in sea-cages, and may also have subtle sublethal effects on fish behavior and physiology. As a result, the data gathered from tagging studies may not be suitable for making decisions related to farm management, and improvements in tagging techniques and reporting transparency are needed in the future.
