On the potential of halophiles enriched from hypersaline sediments for biohydrogen production from saline wastewater

Manal Ali et al.

Summary: This study aimed to enrich halophiles from hypersaline sediment and optimize their use as alternative inoculum for fermentative hydrogen production. The results showed that adjusting operational conditions and supplementing iron can significantly increase hydrogen yield, and halophiles play a key role in glucose-to-hydrogen conversion.

Thermodynamics of volatile fatty acid degradation during anaerobic digestion under organic overload stress: The potential to better identify process stability

Di Wu et al.

Summary: This study reveals that organic overload stress in anaerobic digestion (AD) leads to accumulation of volatile fatty acids (VFAs), decreased methane yield, slower methane production kinetics, and process instability. Thermodynamic analysis shows that moderate organic overload stress only retards the degradation of VFAs without adverse effects. This study provides novel insights into the thermodynamic mechanisms of VFA degradation and has important implications for improving the diagnostic mode for AD process stability.

Enhanced hydrogen production from water hyacinth by a combination of ultrasonic-assisted alkaline pretreatment, dark fermentation, and microbial electrolysis cell

Thi Thu Ha Tran et al.

Summary: This study enhanced hydrogen production from water hyacinth by combining ultrasonic-assisted alkaline pretreatment, dark fermentation, and microbial electrolysis cell. The results showed significant improvements in H-2 production with UAA pretreatment, but high concentrations of metabolite products and suspended solid in DF effluent affected the MEC stage's efficiency. The highest H-2 yield was achieved with a WH concentration of 5 g-TS/L.

Denitrification kinetics indicates nitrous oxide uptake is unaffected by electron competition in Accumulibacter

Samarpita Roy et al.

Summary: Denitrifying phosphorus removal is an energy-efficient treatment technology that relies on microorganisms like Accumulibacter utilizing nitrate or nitrite, but lack of complete denitrification pathways may lead to accumulation of harmful intermediates like nitrous oxide. Genomic analyses suggest that the denitrification abilities of Accumulibacter vary based on lineage. Accumulibacter did not accumulate N2O in the presence of multiple electron acceptors, and denitrification kinetics were not limited by electron competition.

Effect of genus Clostridium abundance on mixed-culture fermentation converting food waste into biohydrogen

Ju-Hyeong Jung et al.

Summary: The study found that heat-treated and frozen H2-producing granular sludge showed higher H2 yield and production rate compared to heat-treated methanogenic sludge in mixed-culture dark fermentative H2 production. Inoculation after centrifugation method demonstrated better H2 production performance. Homoacetogenesis was identified as a major H2-consuming pathway, and the abundance of Clostridium showed a linear relationship with H2 production rate and lag-phase time.

Food Waste: A Promising Source of Sustainable Biohydrogen Fuel

Mahmoud M. Habashy et al.

Summary: Approximately 1.3 billion tons of food is wasted annually worldwide, accounting for one-third of annual food production. Converting food waste into energy is of significant environmental importance due to its sustainability. Nutrients and organic acids in food waste can be utilized to produce biohydrogen, but our understanding of this process is still limited.

Kinetic modeling of hydrogen and L-lactic acid production by Thermotoga neapolitana via capnophilic lactic fermentation of starch

Nirakar Pradhan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the feasibility of hydrogen and L-lactic acid production from starch using Thermotoga neapolitana under capnophilic lactic fermentation conditions. Different yields of H2 and lactic acid were achieved from potato and wheat starch, with higher lactic acid production observed in the presence of CO2. A kinetic model was applied to simulate the metabolic profile and bioreactor performance, suggesting a new direction towards transforming agricultural food waste into biofuels and valuable biochemicals.
