Effect of microwave/hydrothermal combined ionic liquid pretreatment on straw: Rumen anaerobic fermentation and enzyme hydrolysis

Ziqiang Yu et al.

Summary: This study explored green technology for wheat straw pretreatment by combining microwave or hydrothermal with ionic liquid ([Bmim] [OAc]) on wheat straw followed by rumen fermentation. The results showed that the microwave assisted ionic liquids pretreatment (M-I) and hydrothermal assisted ionic liquids pretreatment (H-I) had good lignin removal rates on wheat straw, with the highest volatile fatty acid (VFA) yield in the M-I group during rumen fermentation. Additionally, the optimal ionic liquid dosage was determined to be 30% for cost and VFA conversion rate considerations. The study findings suggest that the combination of M-I pretreatment and rumen fermentation is worth further investigation due to its high product recovery without enzyme addition.

Non-oral Prevotella stepping into the spotlight

Tomaz Accetto et al.

Summary: Species affiliated with genus Prevotella have long been recognized as part of human oral microbiota, isolated from both healthy individuals and patients with periodontitis. While considered opportunistic pathogens, these species have also been found in bacterial abscesses. In contrast, Prevotella species found in the rumen are non-pathogenic and play a crucial role in the rumen ecosystem.

Summary: The study demonstrated that spent mushroom substance (SMS) could efficiently remove lignin through NaOH pretreatment, showing the best performance in the co-fermentation of food waste. Reusing 50% of pretreated liquid (PL) from SMS pretreatment resulted in higher lactid acid concentration and optical purity, with reduced NaOH consumption.

Genomic and functional analyses of fungal and bacterial consortia that enable lignocellulose breakdown in goat gut microbiomes

Xuefeng Peng et al.

Summary: The study found that microbial consortia dominated by anaerobic fungi outperformed bacterially dominated consortia in methane production and cellulose degradation. Cross-domain partnerships between fungi and methanogens enabled the production of acetate, formate, and methane, while bacterially dominated consortia mainly produced short-chain fatty acids. The division of labor among herbivore anaerobes for plant biomass degradation could be utilized for industrial bioprocessing.

Identification of the Potential Role of the Rumen Microbiome in Milk Protein and Fat Synthesis in Dairy Cows Using Metagenomic Sequencing

Xin Wu et al.

Summary: The study found that rumen microbes, especially Prevotella species and Neocallimastix californiae, play important roles in regulating carbohydrate, amino acid, and lipid metabolism and transportation, which in turn affect milk component synthesis in dairy cows. The abundance of specific microbial taxa such as Prevotella was positively correlated with volatile fatty acids concentration, suggesting their involvement in energy and protein synthesis for increased milk fat and protein biosynthesis.

Understanding the Anaerobic Digestibility of Lignocellulosic Substrates Using Rumen Content as a Cosubstrate and an Inoculum

Xavier Fonoll et al.

Summary: Rumen content can enhance anaerobic digestion by providing hydrolytic bacteria, but maintaining rumen microorganisms in continuous-flow AD systems requires careful consideration of pH levels. Using rumen content as a cosubstrate at a low pH (6.0-6.5) is crucial for maintaining rumen hydrolytic bacteria and enhancing hydrolysis efficiency.
