The role of hydroxylamine in promoting conversion from complete nitrification to partial nitrification: NO toxicity inhibition and its characteristics

Junkai Zhao et al.

Summary: The study found that the addition of hydroxylamine can promote the accumulation of nitrite in a complete nitrification reactor, leading to partial nitrification, but the process will gradually disappear after stopping the hydroxylamine addition. Analysis of the microbial community revealed that the inhibition of Nitrospira is significant and reversible, possibly related to NO toxicity.

Reductive potential from cathode electrode as an option for the achievement of short-cut nitrification in bioelectrochemical systems

Jiaohui Xia et al.

Summary: This study explored the use of different reductive potentials to inhibit nitrite oxidizing bacteria and achieve short-cut nitrification in bioelectrochemical systems. The results showed that the applied potential facilitated nitrite accumulation and high ammonia oxidation rates. The study also found a correlation between the abundance of certain bacterial genera and reductive potentials, which can affect the activity of nitric oxide reductase.

Hydroxylamine and the nitrogen cycle: A review

Aina Soler-Jofra et al.

Summary: Aerobic ammonium oxidizing bacteria have been identified more than 100 years ago, with hydroxylamine being known as an intermediate. Recent enzymatic evidence suggests that hydroxylamine is converted to NO and further to nitrite by an unknown enzyme. The nitrogen losses in the form of NO and N2O from three types of aerobic ammonium oxidizing microorganisms, as well as the inhibitory role of hydroxylamine on nitrite oxidizing bacteria, are still under investigation.

Rapid achieving partial nitrification in domestic wastewater: Controlling aeration time to selectively enrich ammonium oxidizing bacteria (AOB) after simultaneously eliminating AOB and nitrite oxidizing bacteria (NOB)

Shuai Li et al.

Summary: This study developed a novel strategy to achieve partial nitrification by selectively enriching ammonium oxidizing bacteria without the need for additional chemical agents. By controlling aeration time, the study successfully eliminated AOB and NOB, while maintaining high nitrite accumulation rates in effluent suitable for mainstream wastewater anammox.
