Pyrolysis of food waste and food waste solid digestate: A comparative investigation

Juan Zhao et al.

Summary: The effects of anaerobic digestion (AD) on pyrolysis were explained by comparing the pyrolysis performance of food waste (FW) and food waste solid digestate (FWSD). The pyrolysis mechanisms of FW and FWSD were revealed through experimental and kinetic analysis, and the properties and potential applications of pyrolytic products from FW and FWSD were discussed. The results showed that AD consumed part of the organic matters in FW, resulting in changes in the pyrolysis performance of FWSD. The pyrolytic gas from FW had better quality, while the pyrolytic oil and biochar derived from FWSD showed better qualities for oil fuel and carbon-based absorbent. Pyrolysis of FWSD produced less nitrogen-containing pollutants, indicating that AD coupled with pyrolysis is a more environmentally-friendly method to treat FW. This study provides a potential approach and theoretical guidance for the treatment and resource utilization of FW and FWSD.

Recovery of Hydroxytyrosol from Olive Mill Wastewater Using the Promiscuous Hydrolase/Acyltransferase PestE

Henrik Terholsen et al.

Summary: Enzymatic transesterification of hydroxytyrosol in an aqueous system in the presence of ethyl acetate yielded a rich extract of 3-hydroxytyrosol acetate. A mutant of the acyltransferase enzyme, immobilized on EziG(2) beads, achieved high hydroxytyrosol conversions of 82-89% in one hour, for at least ten reaction cycles. However, the conversions from olive mill wastewater were lower, ranging from 51% to 62%. A preparative scale reaction resulted in the extraction of 13.8 mg (57%) of 3-hydroxytyrosol acetate from 60 mL of OMWW.
