Liquid hot water as sustainable biomass pretreatment technique for bioenergy production: A review

Wei-Hsin Chen et al.

Summary: In recent years, lignocellulosic biomass has gained attention as a versatile energy source for biofuels and chemicals production, with biomass pretreatment playing a crucial role in enhancing product quality. Liquid hot water (LHW) pretreatment offers advantages such as minimal monomeric sugar formation and significant hemicellulose removal, but constraints need to be addressed for optimal efficiency. Future research should focus on advanced pretreatment techniques based on circular economy principles to maximize efficiency and minimize costs.

A structure-activity understanding of the interaction between lignin and various cellulase domains

Xiaoxue Zhao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the adsorption mechanism and structure-activity relationship between lignin and different cellulase domains using fluorescence spectroscopy and SDS-PAGE. It was found that endo-cellulase 6B had a higher affinity to lignin fractions, which was positively correlated to molecular weight. The adsorption between lignin fractions and endo-cellulase 6B was mainly driven by van der Waals and electrostatic forces, while hydrophobic force drove the adsorption of lignin fractions to CBM4A. The results demonstrated the critical role of lignin's structure in its adsorption with various cellulase domains.

Catalytic fast pyrolysis of beech wood lignin isolated by different biomass (pre)treatment processes: Organosolv, hydrothermal and enzymatic hydrolysis

A. G. Margellou et al.

Summary: The study explores the thermal and catalytic fast pyrolysis of three types of lignin derived from the same biomass but with different isolation processes. The results show that mesoporous ZSM-5 zeolites exhibit higher dealkoxylation reactivity compared to microporous ZSM-5, leading to higher concentrations of BTX aromatics without a significant increase in PAHs. The observed variations in the characteristics of the lignin types did not result in substantial differentiation in the thermal and catalytic fast pyrolysis product yields and composition.

Summary: This study revealed that removing surface lignin significantly decreased the yield for enzymatic hydrolysis of DAP-BR and that the affinity constants of all tested lignins exhibited good correlations with the effects on enzymatic digestibility. Additionally, MWL samples showed a stronger affinity for cellulase enzymes compared to SL samples due to their higher molecular weight and hydrophobicity.
