Quantifying the effects of intraluminal thrombi and their poroelastic properties on abdominal aortic aneurysms

Martina Bukac et al.

Summary: In this study, a poroelastic model for intraluminal thrombus (ILT) was introduced to investigate its impact on the risk of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) rupture. Numerical simulations were performed on three different patient-specific geometries, indicating that the presence of ILT may reduce wall stress in AAA. However, the permeability of ILT has little effect on the Peak Wall Stress (PWS) of AAA, with similar values obtained for both porous and nonporous ILT models.

The Effects of Geometric Features of Intraluminal Thrombus on the Vessel Wall Oxygen Deprivation

Burton Carbino et al.

Summary: The objective of this study is to analyze the impact of intraluminal thrombus (ILT) presence and morphology on oxygen transport in abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA). The study found that ILT reduces oxygen flux to the arterial wall, creating an inflammatory environment and decreasing its strength. The geometry of ILT was also found to potentially affect AAA rupture. ILT thickness and length were found to be the parameters that most significantly influence decreased oxygen flow and concentration values, while thick thrombi exacerbate hypoxic conditions in the arterial wall. Conversely, arterial wall oxygen concentration was nearly independent of the AAA bulge diameter.

Oxygen transport in a permeable model of abdominal aortic aneurysm

Rana Zakerzadeh et al.

Summary: This paper presents a modeling and simulation study of mass and momentum transport through the arterial lumen and the porous arterial wall of an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA). The authors introduce a novel coupled fluid-porous structure-mass transport model to address the impact of porous structure and intramural flow on oxygen concentration in the aneurysmal wall. Computational simulations provide insights into filtration velocity and oxygen concentration in the artery, revealing the essential coupling between blood and filtration flow and how it influences oxygen transport.

Coupled Hemodynamics and Oxygen Diffusion in Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm: A Computational Sensitivity Study

Rana Zakerzadeh et al.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the key features contributing to oxygen diffusion and hypoxia in abdominal aortic aneurysms. Results showed that the diameter of the aneurysm had little effect on oxygen flow, but the thickness of the intraluminal thrombus layer had a profound impact. Additionally, the arterial wall oxygen concentration had a low sensitivity to the oxygen reaction rate.
