Native perennial and non-native annual grasses shape pathogen community composition and disease severity in a California grassland

Amy E. Kendig et al.

Summary: The competence of plant hosts, influenced by their life and evolutionary histories, shapes the composition of pathogen communities and disease severity. Species with longer life spans and evolutionary histories are better defended and pathogens adapt to infect hosts with longer evolutionary histories. Different species densities due to life and evolutionary histories may not significantly affect pathogen community composition and disease severity, pointing to the role of competence in shaping disease dynamics.

Non-native Microstegium vimineum populations collapse with fungal leaf spot disease outbreak

Robert J. Warren et al.

Summary: Non-native plants may initially invade new areas rapidly and seemingly without limits if they lack biological enemies in the novel range, but over time they may acquire new enemies which can suppress their expansion. This process, known as enemy acquisition, can lead to the naturalization of non-native species as they face new pathogens. In the case of the Asian grass Microstegium vimineum, the appearance of a fungal pathogen in populations coincided with a retreat of the once-expanding plant, suggesting that enemy acquisition through pathogens can suppress non-native plant invasions and allow native populations to recover.

Summary: The review covers the progress and projects of using plant pathogens for biological control in South Africa from 1991 to 2020. Monitoring results show significant impact of certain exotic fungi on plant invasions, while indigenous fungi have also been successfully introduced for control purposes.

Thick bark can protect trees from a severe ambrosia beetle attack

John M. Boland et al.

Summary: The study shows that thick bark can protect trees from attacks by the Kuroshio Shot Hole Borer (KSHB) by limiting the density of KSHB entry points and reducing internal structural damage, linking bark thickness to rates of host tree mortality.

Plant Secondary Metabolite Biosynthesis and Transcriptional Regulation in Response to Biotic and Abiotic Stress Conditions

Rahmatullah Jan et al.

Summary: Plant secondary metabolites play crucial roles in plant survival and ecological connections, providing defense against pathogens and stress. The accumulation of these metabolites is highly influenced by environmental factors, and their biosynthesis is regulated by various genes. Transcriptional factors such as WRKY, MYB, AP2/ERF, bZIP, bHLH, and NAC play key roles in regulating secondary metabolite biosynthesis in plants under stress conditions.

Towards a phylogenetic ecology of plant pests and pathogens

Andrew V. Gougherty et al.

Summary: Plant-pathogens and insect pests play crucial roles in shaping ecological communities, and global changes in climate and land use, as well as transportation of plants and pests globally, are likely to exacerbate the range, frequency, and severity of pest outbreaks, highlighting the urgent need to expand ecological theory to address these challenges.
