Biological Nitrogen Removal Database: A Manually Curated Data Resource

Tanyaradzwa R. Ngara et al.

Summary: Biological nitrogen removal (BNR) technologies are effective for treating nitrogen pollutants in wastewater. This study presents BNRdb, a database that integrates various curated BNR-related data. BNRdb contains microbial strains, gene families, enzymes, reactions, treatment datasets, sequencing datasets, and bioreactor systems. It is the first resource to systematically integrate BNR data from archaea, bacteria, and fungi.

Partnering of anammox and denitrifying bacteria benefits anammox's recovery from starvation and complete nitrogen removal

Qingkun Wang et al.

Summary: The cooperative metabolic activity between anammox and denitrifying bacteria can accelerate the recovery of anammox and reduce nitrate production. This study showed that denitrifying bacteria consumed microbial products and synthesized poly-beta-hydroxybutyrate, creating a favorable environment for anammox bacteria growth and enhancing nitrogen removal.

Microbial diversity reveals the partial denitrification-anammox process serves as a new pathway in the first mainstream anammox plant

Zhi-Bin Wang et al.

Summary: The study uncovered the mystery of the PD-anammox process in a sewage treatment plant in Xi'an, China, by analyzing the diversity and phylogenetic investigation of microbial communities in the anoxic pond. It was found that the denitrifying bacteria (DNB) content in the anoxic tank is significantly higher than the content of ammonia oxidizing bacteria (AOB), confirming the existence of a DNB-anammox system at the microbial composition level. Furthermore, genetic analysis showed that the nitrite in the anoxic pool is mainly derived from denitrification, providing a new alternative option for the mainstream application of anammox.

Improving the resistance of Anammox granules to extreme pH shock: The effects of denitrification sludge EPS enhanced by a fluctuating C/N ratio cultivation on granules

Jing Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of DS-EPSCN on the properties of Anammox granules under extreme acid or alkaline shock. The results showed that DS-EPSCN significantly improved nitrogen removal performance under extreme acid shock, attributed to the increase in high-molecular-weight substances. Additionally, DS-EPSCN promoted granule activity but had no influence on granule stability under extreme alkaline shock.

Insight into enrichment of anaerobic ammonium oxidation bacteria in anammox granulation under decreasing temperature and no strict anaerobic condition: Comparison between continuous and sequencing batch feeding strategies

Wenqiang Wang et al.

Summary: A study on anammox granulation in CFR and SBR showed that CFR performed better under decreasing temperature and no strict anaerobic condition, providing a stable and suitable environment for AnAOB to self-aggregate and secrete EPS. Granules in CFR had better rheological properties than that in SBR.
