Assessment of meteorology vs. control measures in the China fine particular matter trend from 2013 to 2019 by an environmental meteorology index

Sunling Gong et al.

Summary: The developed framework using Environmental Meteorology Index (EMI) quantitatively evaluates the impact of meteorology on the trend of PM2.5 concentrations in China. It separates the contributions of meteorology from emission control measures, with the latter being the dominant factor in the decrease of PM2.5 concentrations nationwide. Meteorology has a varying but sometimes critical contribution, accounting for 5% of annual average concentrations and 10%-20% during fall-winter heavy pollution seasons.

Effectiveness of emission control in reducing PM2.5 pollution in central China during winter haze episodes under various potential synoptic controls

Yingying Yan et al.

Summary: Mitigating severe particle pollution in autumn and winter is crucial to improving air quality in China. This study uses synoptic classification and emission control simulations to find that winter haze pollution in central China is mainly influenced by local emissions under specific weather conditions. Different synoptic patterns contribute to pollution episodes, with both local and transported sources impacting PM2.5 levels in the region. Coordination of local and regional emission control actions is essential to effectively reduce haze pollution in different synoptic conditions.
