Molecular Characterization of Nitrogen-Containing Compounds in Humic-like Substances Emitted from Biomass Burning and Coal Combustion

Jianzhong Song et al.

Summary: NOCs in HULIS are important components originating from both BB and CC, characterized by different CHON+ and CHN+ groups with distinct features and sources. The study found that biomass burning generates more NOCs with higher AImod values compared to coal combustion, indicating the potential source difference between the two combustion processes.

Effects of albumin, transferrin and humic-like substances on iron-mediated OH radical formation in human lung fluids

David H. Gonzalez et al.

Summary: In this study, the impact of iron active proteins in lung fluid and humic-like substances on the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) was investigated. It was found that albumin enhances (OH)-O-center dot generation from inorganic Fe(II), while transferrin attenuates this enhancement. The study suggests that fulvic acid, a surrogate for HULIS, is capable of mobilizing Fe(II) away from albumin and transferrin, increasing the formation rate of O-2(center dot-) and ultimately of (OH)-O-center dot.

Summary: The study reveals that oxidative potential (OP) in inhaled ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is mainly caused by transition metals (TMs) and humic-like substances (HULIS), with water-soluble copper (Cu) in Hong Kong samples leading to higher OP than in Beijing samples. Cu is a dominant contributor to hydroxyl radical formation and ascorbic acid depletion, despite higher levels of water-soluble iron (Fe) present.

The Roles of N, S, and O in Molecular Absorption Features of Brown Carbon in PM2.5 in a Typical Semi-Arid Megacity in Northwestern China

Yaling Zeng et al.

Summary: Brown Carbon (BrC) molecules are known for absorbing light in specific wavelengths, with nitrogen-containing organic molecules identified as critical components of light-absorbing matters in both winter and summer seasons. The top BrC molecules were found to be responsible for the majority of absorbances in both seasons, with different relationships between nitrogen and sulfur compounds identified in winter and summer processes.

Chemical composition, optical properties, and oxidative potential of water- and methanol-soluble organic compounds emitted from the combustion of biomass materials and coal

Tao Cao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the characteristics of brown carbon emitted from biomass burning and coal combustion, finding that methanol-soluble organic carbon (MSOC) had the highest light absorption capacity and may better represent total BrC. Significant differences were observed between water-soluble fractions emitted from biomass burning and coal combustion, with biomass burning smoke having higher water-soluble BrC fractions and lower light absorption efficiency.

Atmospheric conditions and composition that influence PM2.5 oxidative potential in Beijing, China

Steven J. Campbell et al.

Summary: Epidemiological studies consistently show the adverse health effects of PM2.5 exposure, with its oxidative potential considered a measure of toxicity. This study in Beijing used four acellular methods to analyze PM2.5 OP, finding seasonal variability and the importance of mass-normalized OP for understanding chemical drivers and sources of PM2.5 toxicity. By comparing mass- and volume-normalized data, it was revealed that different assays cover different chemical spaces, providing a nuanced understanding of PM2.5 composition and its impacts.

Summary: The study investigated the PM2.5-bound NACs in Xi'an, Northwest China, and found distinct seasonal variations in both concentrations and contributions of NACs. Different NAC species dominate in different seasons, indicating variations in emissions and formation pathways. Source apportionment results show large seasonal differences in the sources of NACs, with summer being influenced by secondary formation and vehicle emissions, while winter is dominated by biomass burning and coal combustion.

Brown carbon's emission factors and optical characteristics in household biomass burning: developing a novel algorithm for estimating the contribution of brown carbon

Jianzhong Sun et al.

Summary: Recent studies have highlighted the importance of brown carbon (BrC) in various fields, particularly relating to climate change. The emission factors of BrC from biomass burning vary among different biomass fuels, and biomass briquetting can reduce the emissions of light-absorbing carbon. The annual BrC emissions from China's household biomass burning were found to be higher than those from household coal combustion, with BrC playing a dominant role in total light absorption.
