Hubble Space Telescope Observations of GW170817: Complete Light Curves and the Properties of the Galaxy Merger of NGC 4993

Charles D. Kilpatrick et al.

Summary: We present a comprehensive analysis of the binary neutron star merger GW170817 and its optical counterpart AT 2017gfo using the Hubble Space Telescope imaging. Our findings include new detections of the short gamma-ray burst afterglow, consistent with previously observed spectral index. We also analyze the local environment around AT 2017gfo and the host galaxy NGC 4993, ruling out the presence of certain features and identifying shell structures. Our conclusion suggests that the progenitor system of GW170817 is unlikely to have formed during a galaxy merger.

Gaia Early Data Release 3 The astrometric solution

L. Lindegren et al.

Summary: Gaia EDR3 provides full astrometric data for 1.468 billion sources, including 585 million with five-parameter solutions and 882 million with six parameters, as well as mean positions at J2016.0 for an additional 344 million sources. Five-parameter solutions are generally more accurate and available for 93% of sources brighter than the 17th magnitude, with median uncertainties of 0.02-0.03 mas for parallax and proper motion at G = 9-14, and around 0.5 mas at G = 20. Extensive characterization of the solutions' statistical properties is provided, including the estimated angular power spectrum of parallax bias from quasars.

GRB 180418A: A Possibly Short Gamma-Ray Burst with a Wide-angle Outflow in a Faint Host Galaxy

A. Rouco Escorial et al.

Summary: The observations of GRB 180418A suggest that it may be a short-duration burst with a hard spectrum. The afterglow characteristics indicate that its luminosity is intermediate between short and long bursts, and it lies closer to the E (gamma,peak)-E (gamma, iso) correlation for short bursts.

Modelling synchrotron self-Compton and Klein-Nishina effects in gamma-ray burst afterglows

Taylor E. Jacovich et al.

Summary: In this study, we implemented a self-consistent way of modeling synchrotron self-Compton effects in gamma-ray burst afterglows using the afterglow modeling code boxfit. We found that considering these effects is crucial for accurately fitting X-ray light curves and deriving physical parameters. The inclusion of synchrotron self-Compton effects may significantly impact previous broad-band modeling efforts and physical parameter distributions.

A tale of two mergers: constraints on kilonova detection in two short GRBs at z ∼ 0.5

B. O'Connor et al.

Summary: We conducted a detailed multiwavelength analysis of two short gamma-ray bursts (sGRBs) observed by the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory. The sGRBs, GRB 160624A and GRB 200522A, exhibited different properties in their emission and environments. GRB 160624A was associated with an older galaxy with moderate star formation, while GRB 200522A showed a luminous and red counterpart, possibly due to either kilonova emission or extinction effects.

The Broadband Counterpart of the Short GRB 200522A at z=0.5536: A Luminous Kilonova or a Collimated Outflow with a Reverse Shock?

W. Fong et al.

Summary: We discovered the radio afterglow and near-infrared counterpart of the Swift short gamma-ray burst (GRB) GRB 200522A, which showed different luminosity compared to other similar kilonova candidates, possibly requiring alternative explanations with additional heating sources. If a stable magnetar was indeed produced in GRB 200522A, late-time radio emissions are predicted to be detectable 0.3-6 years after the burst.
