Unicorns and giraffes in the binary zoo: stripped giants with subgiant companions

Kareem El-Badry et al.

Summary: This study analyzes two binary systems containing giant stars and reveals the properties of the companions through spectral disentangling. The results show that the primaries are low luminosity but massive giants, while the secondaries are slightly warmer subgiants. The properties of both systems can be explained by binary evolution models.

Summary: Researchers identify potential companions to most non-interacting black holes and neutron stars by observing tidal-induced ellipsoidal variability, calculating the minimum companion mass through amplitude of variability, mass, and radius estimates, and pinpointing the most promising high mass companion candidates.
