Properties of High-redshift Gamma-Ray Bursts

Chris L. Fryer et al.

Summary: The immense power of gamma-ray bursts allows them to be used as probes of the early universe. By studying the absorption lines in the afterglows of high-redshift gamma-ray bursts, astronomers can understand the evolution of metals in the early universe. This paper presents a detailed study on the properties of long-duration gamma-ray bursts under the black hole accretion disk paradigm, and predicts the evolution of these properties with redshift.

Summary: THESEUS is one of the two space mission concepts being studied by ESA as candidates for the next M5 mission within its Cosmic Vision program. It aims to fully exploit Gamma-Ray Bursts to solve key questions about the early Universe and become a cornerstone of multi-messenger and time-domain astrophysics.

The evolution of the galaxy stellar-mass function over the last 12 billion years from a combination of ground-based and HST surveys

D. J. McLeod et al.

Summary: We present a new determination of the galaxy stellar-mass function (GSMF) over the redshift interval 0.25 <= z <= 3.75, derived from a combination of ground-based and Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging surveys. Our findings show that the double Schechter function is a better fit to the GSMF at all redshifts, while passive galaxies only contribute <= 10% by z ≤ 3, despite dominating the integrated stellar-mass density at lower redshifts.

Constraining the intrinsic population of long gamma-ray bursts: Implications for spectral correlations, cosmic evolution, and their use as tracers of star formation

J. T. Palmerio et al.

Summary: Using a Monte Carlo model, researchers have determined the best fit parameters for the intrinsic population of LGRBs, finding a preferred intrinsic E-p-L correlation with a shallower slope than observed. There is a strong degeneracy between the cosmic evolution of the luminosity function and the redshift distribution of LGRBs, which can be resolved by expanding the sample size.

How unbiased statistical methods lead to biased scientific discoveries: A case study of the Efron-Petrosian statistic applied to the luminosity-redshift evolution of gamma-ray bursts

Christopher Michael Bryant et al.

Summary: Statistical methods, when not recognized for their limitations, can lead to inaccurate or biased conclusions based on assumptions. One example is the non-parametric Efron-Petrosian test statistic, which may result in biased conclusions if the underlying assumptions are not valid.

Redshift evolution of the Amati relation: Calibrated results from the Hubble diagram of quasars at high redshifts

Yan Dai et al.

Summary: Gamma-ray bursts have been proposed as a tool to explore the expansion history of the high-redshift universe. Through calibration with a complete quasar sample, it has been found that the commonly used Amati relation shows little to no evolution with redshift.
