Strong spiral arms drive secular growth of pseudo bulges in disk galaxies

Si-Yue Yu et al.

Summary: Spiral-driven instabilities contribute to gas inflow and enhance central star formation in disk galaxies. Stronger spiral arms are associated with more intense central star formation rates and an increased fraction of pseudo bulges, while the fraction of quenched classical bulges decreases.

Star formation quenching stages of active and non-active galaxies

V Kalinova et al.

Summary: This study proposes a classification method based on mechanisms of star-forming quenching to better understand galaxy evolution. By analyzing maps of ionised hydrogen distribution and nuclear activity of galaxies, they categorize galaxies into different quenching stages and find that galaxies in different stages occupy specific locations on the star-formation-rate versus stellar mass diagram.

Spiral Structure Boosts Star Formation in Disk Galaxies

Si-Yue Yu et al.

Summary: The research shows that spiral structure strength is correlated with star formation rate as a function of stellar mass, with stronger arms seen above the star-forming galaxy main sequence and weaker arms seen below it. Stronger arms are also associated with higher specific star formation rates, and this link is independent of other galaxy structural parameters. Additionally, arm strength positively correlates with H I and H-2 mass fraction in galaxies with cold gas measurements.

Galaxy evolution on resolved scales: ageing and quenching in CALIFA

P. Corcho-Caballero et al.

Summary: This study investigates the fundamental mechanisms driving galaxy evolution in the local Universe by examining different proxies of star formation and colors sensitive to different time-scales. Different evolutionary paths within galaxies are identified, with some showing recent quenching episodes while others exhibit a more consistent aging sequence. The majority of systems appear to align with a secular inside-out scenario, where evolutionary stage is linked to both global and local properties.

Lijie Liu et al.

Summary: High spatial resolution observations of the nearby lenticular galaxy NGC 4429 reveal differences in giant molecular clouds compared to those in the Milky Way disc, with clouds appearing to be in a critical state where external gravity is as important as self-gravity in regulating the clouds.

The elephant in the bathtub: when the physics of star formation regulate the baryon cycle of galaxies

Jindra Gensior et al.

Summary: In certain conditions, galactic dynamics can suppress star formation and play a significant role in galaxy evolution. The study suggests that dynamical suppression is more effective at low gas fractions and may have an impact in the low redshift and high galaxy mass range.
