Properties of High-redshift Gamma-Ray Bursts

Chris L. Fryer et al.

Summary: The immense power of gamma-ray bursts allows them to be used as probes of the early universe. By studying the absorption lines in the afterglows of high-redshift gamma-ray bursts, astronomers can understand the evolution of metals in the early universe. This paper presents a detailed study on the properties of long-duration gamma-ray bursts under the black hole accretion disk paradigm, and predicts the evolution of these properties with redshift.

New Determinations of the UV Luminosity Functions from z ∼ 9 to 2 Show a Remarkable Consistency with Halo Growth and a Constant Star Formation Efficiency

R. J. Bouwens et al.

Summary: This study provides the most comprehensive determinations of the galaxy's rest-frame UV luminosity function (LF) at z similar to 2-9 using the Hubble Space Telescope. The results show a smooth evolution trend in the UV LF from z similar to 10 to z similar to 2, indicating variations in the faint-end slope, characteristic luminosity, and normalization of the LF. These trends can be explained by the evolution of the halo mass function and a simple constant star formation efficiency model.

The slope of the low-energy spectrum of prompt gamma-ray burst emission

M. Toffano et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the prompt emission spectra of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) and finds that long GRBs tend to have more low-energy breaks compared to short GRBs, with the position of the break affecting the spectral slope hardness. By fitting with the Band function, potential breaks in the spectrum can be identified, but in some cases, it may be challenging to distinguish them in the spectra of GRBs due to the limitations of current detectors.

GRB jet structure and the jet break

Gavin P. Lamb et al.

Summary: The study investigates the shape of the jet break in within-beam gamma-ray burst optical afterglows for various lateral jet structure profiles, finding that the sharpness of the jet break is higher when lateral spreading is included. The sharpness of the jet break is strongly dependent on the inclination angle and the size of the core for different jet profile shapes.

Modeling the Prompt Optical Emission of GRB 180325A: The Evolution of a Spike from the Optical to Gamma Rays

R. L. Becerra et al.

Summary: The transition from prompt to afterglow emission in gamma-ray bursts is one of the least understood phases. By exploring the correlations among optical, X-ray, and gamma-ray emissions, researchers attempt to determine the origins of the earliest optical emission. Observations of GRB 180325A show strong optical flashes with separate peaks followed by a temporally extended optical emission, while X-ray and gamma-ray observations detected a narrow flash at around 80 seconds, suggesting different physical processes for the various emissions.
