Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) Physical Function Instruments Compare Favorably With Legacy Patient-Reported Outcome Measures in Upper- and Lower-Extremity Orthopaedic Patients: A Systematic Review of the Literature

Alexander C. Ziedas et al.

Summary: This study compared PROMIS Physical Function (PF) with traditional patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) in orthopaedic conditions. The results showed strong correlations between PROMIS PF scores and legacy PROMs in upper and lower extremity orthopaedic patients. PROMIS PF forms were more efficient to administer and had high reliability. Therefore, PROMIS PF measures can be standardized and used to improve outcome aggregation and comparison in orthopaedic research.

A comparison of 6-month outcomes between periacetabular osteotomy with concomitant hip arthroscopy to isolated hip arthroscopy for femoroacetabular impingement

Thomas Ellis et al.

Summary: In females under 30 years of age, there was no significant difference in outcomes at 6 months when comparing PAO + HA to HA for the treatment of FAI and chondrolabral pathology. The more extensive surgery with PAO did not negatively impact outcomes at 6 months compared to HA. These findings support the use of PAO + HA, especially in cases where prolonged disability, mental health issues, and higher pain levels might be a concern.

Modified Harris Hip Score as patient-reported outcome measure in osteoarthritic patients: psychometric properties of the Greek version

Sophia Stasi et al.

Summary: The modified Harris Hip Score-Greek version (mHHS-Gr) showed moderate to excellent reliability, significant moderate to strong validity properties, and excellent responsiveness as a patient-reported outcome (PRO) measure in patients with osteoarthritic hip, indicating its reliability and validity for assessing these patients.

The Majority of Patient-reported Outcome Measures in Pediatric Orthopaedic Research Are Used Without Validation

Gabriel R. Arguelles et al.

Summary: After screening 1000 articles, it was found that the majority of pediatric orthopaedic studies used at least one PROM without complete validation, mainly due to the use of adult-validated PROMs or PROMs designated as invalid for pediatrics. The use of incompletely validated PROMs was associated with smaller sample size and subspecialty.

Isolated Acetabuloplasty for Femoroacetabular Impingement: Favorable Patient-Reported Outcomes and Sustained Survivorship at Minimum 5-Year Follow-Up

Matthew J. Hartwell et al.

Summary: Isolated acetabular osteoplasty can provide sustained clinical benefits for patients with femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) syndrome, with good to excellent patient-reported outcomes and patient acceptable symptomatic state (PASS) rates, and a low rate of conversion to total hip arthroplasty (THA) at minimum 5-year follow-up.

Defining Clinically Significant Improvement on the Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System Test at 1-Year Follow-up for Patients Undergoing Hip Arthroscopy for the Treatment of Femoroacetabular Impingement Syndrome

Blake M. Bodendorfer et al.

Summary: This study defined the MCID, PASS, and SCB for PROMIS-PF CAT and PROMIS-PI CAT at 1 year postoperatively in patients undergoing hip arthroscopy for FAIS. Higher preoperative PROMIS scores, younger age, and lower BMI were positive predictors of achieving CSO, while preoperative chronic pain and history of orthopaedic surgery were negative predictors.

When national drug surveys take too long: An examination of who is at risk for survey fatigue

Austin Le et al.

Summary: The study examined data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health in the U.S. and found that participants who reported using more drugs in the past year were more likely to feel that the survey took too long. More missing responses, especially when skipping over multiple drug-related questions, were also associated with this perception of lengthy surveys. Participants who did not speak English, had difficulty concentrating, or had trouble understanding the interview were more likely to feel the survey was too time-consuming.

Patient-reported experience with patient-reported outcome measures in adult patients seen in rheumatology clinics

Brittany R. Lapin et al.

Summary: Most patients reported positive experiences with completing PROMs, finding the questions easy to understand, useful, and improving communication with their physician. Younger age, non-white race, lower income, and being a new patient were associated with better experiences with PROMs.
