Deoxynivalenol exposure assessment through a modelling approach of food intake and biomonitoring data-A contribution to the risk assessment of an enteropathogenic mycotoxin

Carla Martins et al.

Summary: A modelling approach was used to estimate the exposure to deoxynivalenol (DON) in the Portuguese population, showing that a fraction of the population might exceed the Tolerable Daily Intake, especially children and adolescents. These results provide important contributions to understand the exposure to this mycotoxin in Portugal and assess potential public health consequences.

The Occurrence of Mycotoxins in Raw Materials and Fish Feeds in Europe and the Potential Effects of Deoxynivalenol (DON) on the Health and Growth of Farmed Fish Species-A Review

Paraskevi Koletsi et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the occurrence of mycotoxin patterns in feedstuffs and fish feeds, and summarized the effects of DON on farmed fish species. The risk of DON exposure in fish was assessed, with results indicating that the risk of DON contamination is underestimated in the aquaculture industry. The importance of regular state-of-the-art mycotoxin analyses to prevent detrimental effects on farmed fish was emphasized.

Modelling the Renal Excretion of the Mycotoxin Deoxynivalenol in Humans in an Everyday Situation

Annick D. van den Brand et al.

Summary: The study assessed the relation between dietary intake of deoxynivalenol (DON) and the excretion of its major metabolite DON-15-glucuronide (DON15GlcA) in urine samples collected over 24 hours. The estimated time in which 97.5% of ingested DON was excreted as DON15GlcA was 12.1 hours, with an elimination half-life of 4.0 hours. The mean reversed dosimetry factor (RDF) of DON15GlcA was calculated as 2.28, which can be used to estimate total DON intake based on the excreted amount of DON15GlcA.
