Folic acid and neural tube defects: Discovery, debate and the need for policy change

Summary: Neural tube defects (NTDs) are a relatively common group of fatal or severely disabling birth defects, with about 300,000 cases occurring worldwide each year. Approximately 80% of these NTD cases can be prevented by supplementing with vitamin B9 (folate).
